Hi there, I have a 2005 Explorer with AdvanceTrac.

I noticed in the manual that when changing the rear differential fluid, it calls for removing the ABS sensor and adding fluid from there as well.

Is this really necessary and have any of you changed your fluid without doing so?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you have AdvanceTrac, you have four-wheel ABS, which means the rear ABS sensors are mounted on the wheels, not on the differential.

I will have to get the exact wording from the manual. Maybe I am misunderstanding it.

Anyone here changed their fluid on an explorer with advance trac?

OK, here it is...

What tool did you use to remove the drain plug?

I couldn't find a 3/4 inch drive tool, so I went to Home Depot and bought a piece of 3/4 inch square welding stock. I pushed that into the drain plug (it fit perfectly), then used a large crescent wrench to turn the welding stock.

They are hard to find, but Sears has the right size adapter that goes right on the end of a wrench. You just put it in the drain plug and turn counter clockwise.

Do I need to buy 2 or 3 bottles of Mobil1 75w-140?
Per my calculation (and I could be wrong) it will take a little more than 2 bottles and the friction modifier.
The owner manual capacity for rear axle is 3.5 pints (56 ounces) + 1 pint (20 ounces) for top fill comes to total of 76 ounces.
1 bottle of Mobil1 is 32 ounces so 2 bottles plus friction modifier totals to 68 ounces.

Mobil 1 has the friction modifier already in it

1 pint = 16 oz. Total 72 oz
That leaves you only 4 oz short. I would probably let that slide.
