Shifter Knob Removal??

Has anyone successfully removed and replaced the shifter knob? I have a 2011 XLT, and the knob is simply worn and looks like crap. I know that I can purchase a shifter assembly for about $125-$150 but really do not want to replace that entire assembly as I am leary of re-connecting all of the wires and connectors that go along with it.
