Spedometer Intermintent

When driving my 96 explorer sport the spedo sometimes doesn't work and when it does it bounces around the speed I'm going. Is it time to change the VSS?

Could be that but a bad vss is usually accompanied by other issues. I would suspect bad stepper motor inside the speedo. So I would get a scanner with a live datat feed and watch for a vehicle speed PID. It should show how fast you are going if it doesn't its a sensor. If it does its either wiring or the speedo ( stepper motor) bad. If you know what a stepper motor is good if not just get a cluster, it is kind of involved to change. Only if you wanted to keep your original odometer.
