Spring pads - How important are they?

Hi guys; I'm preparing to install an AAL to a monoleaf
Explorer Sport. The new springs have a hole in each end
for a spring pad. Should I order new pads?

Second question; can these pads be installed with the
spring already in place?

Well, I ordered a set of aftermarket 'HELP' pads.
Maybe they'll get here before I get around to
installing the leafs, so I'll just snap them in
before the work begins.

I know a lot of people leave them out when doing
spring work, but they must be there for a reason,
if nothing but to eliminate squeaking....
