Storing Spare Tire

In re-storing the spare tire, on 97 AWD, the jack instructions state to crank the tire up until a ratchet sound is heard. I cranked pretty hard and I didn't hear any ratchet sound.

Moreover, I just had to purchase a new jack handle because I broke mine when doing some recent work and I don't want to have to spend another $29.

Should the jack crank really make a ratchet sound?

uhhh..mine doesn't..mine says to crank it till the tire is firmly seated against the frame...you twist that thing too hard you'll break the cable...

not sure if its the same on the explorers but on chrysler minivans if you overcranked the winch that holds the spare up the winch would break and it wouldnt be able to hold a tire anymore. The thing could barely keep the cable up.
