Hi,
I have 96 Explorer Sport, 4.0L pushrod engine. When I drive it around with heater turned off, my temp gauge sit pretty much in the middle between L and H marks. It moves a little bit up or down depending on the condition, but not much. However, if I turn on the heat, I see temp gauge climbing up almost all the way to H and then droping down to L periodically. This behavior does not depend on driving conditions. I can be on highway doing 70 or around the city, same thing. Every 2-3 minutes the need goes almost all the way up and then almost all the way down. If I turn off the heat, things go back to normal. Put it on again and the problem re-appears.
What can it be? I've already replaced water pump and Tstat and will be replacing radiator cap tonight. No problems what so ever when driving w/o heat. Has anything experienced this behavior?
Thanks
