Temperature gauge comes on then off

I have a 2006 Explorer 4.0...The last few days when I start the car up and get going the tempertaure sky rockets to H and the temp light comes on. I few seconds later it goes right back inbetween the H and C. Anyone have any ideas? Bad Gauge? Radiator? Low Coolant?

You could have low coolant. The leftover coolant in the engine will turn to steam in the engine, so it will take longer for the thermostat to open. Just a guess.

I got word from the shop, I need a new radiator, fan, and fan clutch. Total cost of doing business? 800 bucks....That hurts the wallet. SHould a 3 year old truck have this issue? I dont think so.
