Whats In A Name?

It was hot humid august night. The winds have all but vanished. I was doing my best to keep the sweat out of my eyes. The A/C was dying in my 94 Explorer, lovingly named "Pugly", and there was no relief in sight. I decided it was time to stop throwing good money into bad. I was gonna do the unthinkable,.......I was going to commit the most heinous crime of them all! I was going to trade Pugly in for a newer model! Oh the heart break! The insanity of it all! I couldn't believe the thoughts were even going through my head.

I managed to get the old girl back home, to her resting place. She seemed at ease in her familiar surroundings. I had to come up with an explanation to let her know of my evil plan. So i just gave her that old wink and grin that she likes to see from me as we made it back home from another day of adventure in the treacherous Midwestern terrain. I did my best in hiding my cynical thoughts, as I walked around to her rear flank and gave her that little pat on her bumper, as I always have when we part for the night.

The next morning I gave her a real good bath, cleaned behind her mirrors, and brushed her grill. She still looked pretty good for her age. Oh sure she had the tell tale signs, gravity has got its firm grip on her, and I am not the best cosmetics guy in the world. she didn't seem to mind too much, she still kept her nose up and drove with pride.

After looking at many vehicles I just could not find anything that had the same feel as my old girl. Then it happened! Was I seeing a mirage? Was I so desperate to find another rig that I was blinded by insanity? I found my replacement! I quickly made a sale with the owner, and brought it home.

When I pulled in the driveway, my heart sunk as I looked into the yard to see my 94 looking at me in disbelief. She was sunning herself in the grass looking all shiny and then, she just looked away from me. My heart was tearing in two. I parked the new rig, and walked up to her and gave her a soft spoken "Hello". No reply. I tried to tickle her mirrors, no response. The tension was so great, you could have cut it with a 32 count fine tooth hacksaw. I had to explain to her that she gave me great satisfaction for many years, and we made a terrific team together, but the time has come for her to just relax and enjoy her final days. She finally revved up, and understood, her days as my work horse has ended (so we thought).

I introduced her to her daily driver replacement. The shiny new(er) next generation of her kind. The 95 Explorer XLT. She warmed right up to it. Before you know it they were swapping stories. Now I had to ask her for help. I needed a name for the new ride,
so I went to find her, and what did I see? Those two were grill to grill in the driveway. rubbing chrome! I had to get the water hose out and break them up! Sheesh, she was acting like a girl at the prom dance! I let the name thing drop for awhile.

The new(er) Ex needed to get its shots, and a physical. When I got the word on it's health, I about had a coronary. "What do you mean Doc"! I yelled. "Your kidding right"? I asked. The Doc just shook his head and gathered his tools. As he walked away, He said it had a 50/50 chance of survival. My stomach knotted up, my teeth ground, my heart raced, and I could feel the energy build up as I let it all out, "Why! Why! Why did this have to happen"! I screamed.

The prognostic exam from the doc was as such. It had a blown steering rack, the shocks were gone, the brakes were non existent, front sway bar was cracked in half, the 3rd brake light was out, none of the windows or the moon roof would work, the door locks were broke, the rear end LS clutch pack was burned up, the tires were all in need of replacement, the spare was a Firestone recall and flat, the engine had a nasty tick to it, the TPS was shot, the MAF was corroded, the battery had a dead cell in it, the hood shocks were not working, the rear hatch lock was jammed up and you couldn't open it with out a key in the lock, The carpet was stained to no repair, the rear window wiper didn't want to work, and we could not tell what year its engine swap came from. it was a mess, to say the least.

I went in the house to get my gun. I was gonna just put it out of its misery right there and then. I suddenly realized I was out of ammo, from shooting at the jeep that was in my field. I went to the computer to find a place to buy some cheap ammo, and I stumbled across this website, explorerforum.com that said it could heal any ford Explorer no matter what the problems were! I jumped for joy, I could not believe the things I was reading! I wore out the search button, asked a bunch of questions. I quickly broke out my pen and paper, feverishly writing down things as I was learning! I had found a cure for everything that was wrong with my new transport. It was a Godsend, an angel from the SUV heavens!

I sprung into action. I worked day and night, Pugly was right by my side the entire time, helping me in any way she could. I never seen this side of her, and was really amazed at how well she handled the pressure. She gently squeegeed the sweat out off my fore head with her soft wiper blades as I worked away. After an entire weekend of work, I collapsed. I needed some rest, and so did the 95. The sun crested over the hills, and awoke me to a new day. I shuffled my feet to the window facing the driveway, peeled the drapes gently back, and peered out at the 95. WOW!
It had a its color back, and was looking great! Now as the time went on, (and most of my paychecks), and the selling of almost everything I own, for funds to get the 95 to its former glory.

After some time to reflect on this name thing, I strolled up and whispered into Pugly's passenger side mirror, and she giggled with delight.

I climbed up onto the front bumper in my pajamas and robe half opened, with a cup of coffee in one hand and the daily newspaper in the other, I raised my arms with out stretched hands and proclaimed the new name of the 95.

BEHOLD...........THE BLACK HOLE!!!!!!!! (Then the neighbor yelled at me to close my robe)

The End................(or is it just the beginning?)

Actually, only some of this really happened. :D

I phoned JD and the dude on the phone was less than helpful, dunno if it was cos I'm a limey, in Canada, or whatever... but I got some prices on stuff, but he wasn't sure it was the right stuff...

Do you have the part number for the spring tower? and will their dual shock towers be ok? or will I have to get 2 single shock towers and mount them either side of the spring?

I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Si

So ,where are you relocating to?

A few hundred miles across the state is all. Far enough to make it seem like across the country tho. Everything is different. People, cost of living (higher), scenery, you name it. Property here is 3 x's as much here than what I am used too. Rent is 3 x's as much too. Not sure how long I will stay, so I'm only renting. What's available for what I can afford isn't much. Won't have the good size property to have a bunch of stuff with me, like I had before. I'm downsizing on everything for this move.

So the EX-orcisim of the failing brakes didn't work. It's back.

This rig has sat for a long time, and was taken for it's routine state inspection.
The brake pedal slowly went to the floor when the tech was moving it into the bay. He failed it on the spot. :(

So since it has had 3-4 master cylinders replaced, and the last one with a used motorcraft unit, and the same thing keeps happening.

I'm at a loss once again. It has to be a leak somewhere. I think I should do the lines over again with new flares. I made double flares on everything, but I think I am going to try single flares this time. Why? Because I am not a pro at making flares and have only done them a few times in my lifetime. It has to be my error in my skills that is causing this to happen, and the flares seem to be a logical choice for an area to fail and leak.

Bypassing might not be caused by a bad master, and could just be a leak in the system. :dunno:

The upper ball joint on the Mcquay Norris extreme unit has failed inspection with slight movement, and needs replaced.

The inner Mcquay Norris extreme TRE has some slop in it as well. Both need to be replaced.

A hub might need replaced as it has some movement, but that can be from the inner TRE. Wont know for sure until it is swapped out.

I jinked myself the other day when I mentioned it is always something with these rigs. Yup!!

Inner TRE, & Pas UBJ replaced over the weekend. Nice & tight again. I kept the old ones as they were not that bad actually, and will make great trail spares.

Now the brake issue on the other hand is just downright upsetting.

Made all new flares and replaced all the flare nuts and the junction Tee. Gravity bled them (Nobody around to help pump the pedal) and went thru an entire quart of new fluids over a period of 3 hours.

Engine off: Pedal pumps to the top and is as firm as can be.

Engine on: Pedal loses firmness and goes to the floor. :thumbdwn:

Turn engine off: Pedal pumps back up and holds it's firmness perfectly.

Restart engine: Pedal does the same, loses pressure and drops to the floor again. :thumbdwn:

Replaced a year or so ago, and rig has sat mostly that entire time:
Power booster
Motorcraft Master cylinder
4 calipers
All new discs & pads
New lines except the line in the frame rail

Did the ABS delete to eliminate the module pump as a problem in the system. Rear pressure is set at 600 PSI giving the rig a 70/30 set up.

I can only assume the master or the booster is bad as the brakes only lose pressure when the engine is running. (checked vac line coming from intake and has strong vac)

This rig is going to be stripped of all its mods and sold for scrap soon as it is no good to anybody with no brakes.

I would suspect the booster. Also, it could be that you have a nasty air bubble that you can't get out by gravity bleeding.

I bought 'speed bleeders' from Carquest that have small one way valves in each unit, for about $10 a pair. Combo that with a good funnel and a bit of electrical tape, and you can do a full system bleed, at every corner, in about 20 minutes.

I tried the speed bleeders on this rig, and one on the front pass side impeded the bleed, so I replaced them all with normal bleeders.

I'm either going after another master or a new booster, I haven't decided as of yet.

I started a new thread on this issue, to try to get fresh ideas, and maybe get something suggested that hasn't been done yet. So far no luck. Everything suggested so far has been done or gone over already.

I realize there is only so much I can do on this system, as there are only so many parts to it. My only hope right now is that I have installed faulty parts, and need to replace them when I find them. :banghead:

Do you have someone there who can look things over with you, or do a two man bleed? I feel like this could be some stupid simple issue that is hiding in plain sight. I've had many of them over the years...

Worst case: hand a friend you trust a 6 pack and ask them to look it over while you do something else. Sometimes the best thing to do with seriously frustrating problems is to walk away. My father in law and I tend to do that for each others rigs more often that we would care to admit.

Yeah, I'm beyond frustrated with this issue.

I thought about taking it to a brake shop & telling them to just find the issue, and fix it, and don't call me back until its done. Then the thought of the repair bill smacked me upside my head, and I figure I could buy another rig for less & swap the mods to the new rig. I do have someone to help with the bleed, I just have to teach him what to do is all. Doubtful he will like the sore leg after all the pedal pumping. LOL

I am going to try something new today. Turboexplorer gave me a tip to help deduce the issue or narrow it down by pinching off each soft line and seeing if the pedal pumps up or not. If it doesn't, its before the calipers, if it does, its a caliper or something after the pinch. I dig this idea a lot, and can't wait to try it. :)

Yowza, Good Luck with this!

Pinching the soft line is not a good idea unless your gonna replace them, they are made with layers and if you pinch them enough to stop the flow of fluid they will seperate inside ad while it may take a while to happen it will collapse inside and act like a check valve usually locking up the brake, bench bleed the master and you will be able to tell if its good, if it is then reinstall and peddle lead each wheel, if it still happens I would swap out the booster,

Greg call my bothers boys and ask him to take a look at it, as he's one of the top mechanics in the area. If David can't find it (pitch it) let me know and i'll give you his # :D

and are you sure you have changed out all those double flares on the lines you installed, as the brass and steel block's use single flares

I redid the flares, but did a double flare again. I was told to never do a single flare. They don't leak at least. Nice and dry at the Junction Tee. The other ends are the factory flares on the new hard lines I used.

I will keep your nephews in mind if I can't resolve this issue, thanks for that!

:salute:

With a heavy heart, I have to put this up for sale due to lost wages, and incoming bills. Turns out the place I worked for decided to keep a lot of my pay for themselves. :(

I do not even know what to ask for it, as the sentimental value is priceless to me.

Being that the holidays has just passed, it is going to be near impossible to sell for even half of whats been invested already. I looked over the sales threads here for complete rigs, and it doesn't look good for sellers. I am amazed at the low prices being offered, and nobody jumping on them. The economy is still in the crapper I guess.

I will come up with a price by the end of the weekend. This sucks.....

Very Sorry to hear, on All of it. From what I remember you sacrificied ALOT just to take this job. Hope things Get Better Soon!!!

Man I hope things take a turn for the better for you man. I've been unemployed since Sept. myself with very little luck finding work that will actually cover the bills.

Companies don't care about their employee's anymore, the more you do for the company the more the take advantage of that and you're always the first to get screwed. Sorry, rant over.

Best of luck with everything man. If you can hold on to it till tax time in a month or two and get more buyers interested with funds.

Thanks rebel.
Hope it turns around for you as well. The dif with my situation is I was working just didn't get paid for it.

I will be placing a sale thread here with a cheaper price than anywhere else soon.

Really bummed to see you have to do this. We all certainly know it's hard when you put all that work and money into this hobby only to have to give it up. Hope something turns up for you out there.

Do you have enough/any contacts to get your own thing going?
