Vehicle turns off while driving

my wife basically inherited my 2004 ford explorer XLT 4wd from me. this has happened to her occasionally. when she is driving, the car would shut down and the steering wheel will tighten up. she also says that all the lights on the dash panel around the speedometer and gages would come on. this has happened when using the cruise control and when not using it. but after turning the key off and back on, it starts right back up. it never has happened to me, i just think my car doesn't likes her. i would appreciate anyone that can help with this as she normally has my daughter(6) and son(9months) with her and wouldn't want her & kids stranded on the side of the road. Thank you.

I had similar problem with my 04 when setting cruise control at 35 MPH. Never had the problem when not using cruise. However, there are some posts that indicate this could be problem with throttle body. See http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208041

check and clean all sensors and the TB.
