VR springs and EB spring mount ?

Finally at the point where I can begin mounting the axle. Here's the questions:

1) can a variable rate spring be installed upside down?

2) EB spring cups - when the spring is only on the cup and not the upper bucket, will there be a bunch of play? Spring won't come out, but it flops everywhere.

#1 the tighter wraps on the JD coils go to the top
#2 take a hammer and fold the inner coil retainer bucket over a bit cause it should hold the spring firmly in place when its bolted to the arm or you will have creaking and squeeking from the spring shifting slightly.
