Won't shift out of park.

Ok yesterday i went to put my truck in park and it woudnt shift into it. so my husband tried and some how he got in park now it dont want to come out of park and it wont turn on when its in that gear. To turn it on we have to switch the key to on then put in neutural then turn it on and shift to drive. The break lights do work so i dont think it is the break light switch and we checked all the fuses. I just want to know if it could be anything other than the brake shift interlock switch I dont want to go buying the part if it could be something else.
