I am also curious about this swap but for a 97 explorer sport with a 4.0.

What parts are needed to swap a C5 in behind a 4.0?

Actually have decided to do a 700R4 swap just found out the advance adapters makes a kit for it to go to our 4.0l I believe Jefe has done one.

I am putting a C4 and D20 combo behind my 4.0L. What I was told is you have to get the C5 bellhousing from a BroncoII that has a 4.0L. I haven't found one yet.

Don't forget that the C4 and C5 trannys came in old Mustangs, too. However, I'm not sure that the bellhousing for a 289/302 would mate to a 4.0 V6 (but it should to a 5.0 V8).

I know the C4 was in the early models ('65, '66). I think they switched over in '67 or '68 when the big blocks (390, 428) became available. '69 & '70 might be good models to check, too. But, at some point, I think they switched again to the FM400(??) slushbox. Let me ask some more knowledgable 'Stang friends.

Oh my gosh....

OKay first off Alaskan Ford never made more then a handful of 4.0L BII's and none of them had a C5/C4 tranny.

The bellhousing you want is a C5 auto from a 2.8L Capri, or early BII/Ranger 2wd. I believe the Mustang also had a 2.8l/C5 combo. I believe there is also a C5 behind some of the pinto engines :) Good luck! They are getting harder and harder to find, the flywheel I believe is the hardest part to locate.

You can use the C5 and rebuild it with C4 internals, get the correct flywheel and starter and you are in business. Wiring will be required as well as a 5 speed computer for the 4.0L. Shifter and kick down will take some doing as well.

If you do a search you will see this is convered in depth, Doug ran a C4 in his Ranger for a while.
Dont forget the C4 is a 3 speed, no more overdirve for you!
I will using a C4 eventually in my truck when its no longer my daily, unless I just go 5.0L

Ah so I have been looking for the wrong thing ..... no wonder I haven't found one.

OK, according to this Web Site, the C5 transmission came in the following:
1984 Bronco II 3 Speed 4X4, 1973-1983 F100, 1975-1986 F150 3 Speed 2WD, 1973-1981 F250 3 Speed 2WD, 1970 Fairlane, 1982-1983 Fairmont, 1975-1982 Granada, 1983-1986 LTD, 1977-1978 LTD II, 1976 Maverick, 1982-1986 Mustang, 1983 Ranger, 1982-1986 Thunderbird, 1970-1974 Torino, 1972-1977 E Series

However, Jaime already said there were no BIIs with the C5 and I've seen other sites that list the 1984/85 Ranger as well. My 'Stang friends tell me "early 80's Mustangs" have the C5 (see above). I must have been
thinking about the C6 for early Mustangs with big block engines.

Hope this helps - Dave.

Jamie said that none of the very few 4.0 BIIs came with C5s. I had always heard that 84/85 BIIs came with C5s, maybe Jamie can help with that one. I always keep a lookout for them at my junkyard, but they seem to only have '86+.

I was looking for one myself - and found a transmission rebuilder that had several - but he wanted $250 a pop. Too steep for my tastes - I can do the 700R4 easier.

Well I just realized that all this doesn't tell me which engine???? Should I be looking for these vehicles with a 4.0L engine and C5??

AJ,
That web site didn't list the engine displacement but I believe glf is right, 2.8L is what you're looking for.

As I recall... (this is from memory - I used to work on that older stuff a lot)

The C4's were behind almost everything Ford built in the late 60's and early 70's. Check out Mavericks, etc. Anything with a 240/300 6 cylinder or a 289/302 could have had the C4 - even vans and pickups (E/F100's). They came in short and long tailshaft models - with some of the heavier duty applications having the short tail shafts (vans and trucks).

The FMX was also used quite frequently and it is not as desirable a transmission - and it has (as I recall) a cast iron case instead of the smooth aluminum one of the C4. The FMX was a dog - and no one liked/used them back in the day.

The C5 bellhousing was only installed on the 2.8 V-6 in the early Rangers - perhaps early Areostars - and Mustang II's - but also perhaps the Pinto (though most had C3's - which are the base tranny for the 4R and 5R series now in use in the Explorer and Ranger).

2.8 - 2.9 - and 4.0 all share a common block bolt pattern, though little else.

The other motors (3.0- etc.) are different.
