Offroad Projects

Big projects... Lifts, Swaps, etc... IMPORTANT As the subject use your name, or the name of your truck, and the name of the project. Such as Superlift 5.5" installation, Dana 44 conversion, etc.

Solid Axle Swap Registry

If you have completed a solid axle swap on your Explorer and would like to share the results with others this is the place to do it:D This isn't the place to talk about a work in progress, rather a place for the FINAL results, specs, instructions etc

Overlanding, Expedition vehicle, Adventure rig, Family wheeler.. call it what you want, but I need some ideas for the next build. So decipher my ramblings below and add your suggestions/ideas/thoughts/examples/pics/etc.. My 1993 Sport is officially entering 'no longer able to attempt at being street legal' phase so the planning of a road friendly adventure vehicle is beginning. I will most likely be retaining my D44, Duff arms, 8.8 and 37s for the new build and although I have some ideas for a platform in mind I would like to get some of your thoughts/ideas. I have a 1997 V8 Explorer which gives me a great drivetrain, comfort, room for the family or the ability to sleep in the rig. I have been eyeing up ext. cab Rangers as well as I...
After I installed my used Superlift, I needed front sway bar links. None were available locally, and the Superlift parts were expensive. My stockers were rusted solid, I had to hacksaw them off, so I had no choice but to make some. Parts List: 2 pieces appropriate length of 3/8" galvanized steel pipe 2 pieces 3/8" All thread 2 nylon lock nuts, 3/8" 4 standard nuts 3/8" 1 Energy Suspension's Sway Bar End Link Set (http://www.energysuspension.com/pages/endl.html) This is really simple- With your suspension loaded, level your sway bar, measure the distance between the hole in the lower control arm and the end of the sway bar. Take that measurement, subtract 2" from that length. Cut the 3/8" pipe to that length. Take...
Has anyone bypassed the computer controlled lock up on the A4LD. Im looking at my trans upgrades and was thinking this would be useful to get some extra compression braking coming down hills etc. I was just thinking of a simple toggle to activate the solenoid when I need it. I havent looked through the wiring diagrams yet, just looking for someplace to start. Also looking for a mod list for the trans, from those who have done a performance upgrade(or as much of one as you can do). I have a list but am looking for ideas.
Here in Nova Scotia, we mostly wheel in the woods and on the powerlines, where it's overgrown, muddy, snowy and dry in the summer. I've decided to not put a ton of money into the TTB and do a solid axle swap. I bought a set of '197x' F150 axles - High Pinion open knuckle Dana 44 and Ford 9 inch with 4.56 gears. '197x' because the rear end is stamped 73, and it has drums up front so it could be a 73..who knows. I've previously done this same swap on a 2002 Xterra with an 8.8 and a '79 HP Dana 44, so I'm armed with some lessons learned from that project. Namely, the upper coils towers were too far inbound, so the coils had a slight angle, which ended up pushing the radius arms off the axle mounts due to sideways stress. A few thing...
OK, here goes...my 92 Explorer just about to go to a 1976 F150 HP Dana 44 and Ford 9 inch with 4.56 gears. A few thing need to be addressed with my purchase; it has drum brakes up front, so I want to swap to discs one side of the Dana 44 has a broken inner and outer shaft due to a blown ujoint it needs radius arm pivot and C bushings the coil buckets have seen better days I have previously SAS'd a 2002 Nissan Xterra with a 1979 Bronco setup, so I already have some lessons learned. This time I'll make sure the coils are completely vertical, and I'll buy a Superlift adjustable track-bar instead of cutting and sleeving it to fit. Superlift Track Bar It should be a relatively simple swap since there's no IFS hardware to remove from the...
Its that time of year again. What is the stuff you would add to your Explorer / Ranger / RBV if you could just go purchase whatever you wanted, and why? Here is my list for Santa: - New rear shocks; 1" shorter shocks would allow me to move them outward at the top helping with on-highway body roll, smoother ride. - Atlas Transfer Case; Better low range, stronger, no chain, and because its an Atlas. - 8.8 C-clip eliminator kit; Much stronger rear axle without any other suspension modifications, eliminates wheel adaptors (5x4.5 to 5x5.5). - Custom leaf packs from National Spring; Smoother ride, military wrap springs, etc. - 37" tires and 17" wheels; Increased ground clearance, 35's are so last decade. - GM 3800 supercharged V6 engine...
For those of us who have D44 front axles, when do you replace the ball joints? I have a tiny amount of wiggle in the passenger lower joint that when I greased it up went away. Its been bugging me since I noticed it last month. They are AutoZone lifetime joints that I got when I did the swap due to time constraints, planning on upgrading later. Would you replace passenger side with same AZ joint under warranty? Replace all 4 with these https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=203292&cc=1120723&jsn=497? Or these https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=10318100&cc=1120723&jsn=500? Or, my favorite: Keep an eye on it until it shows more wear??
Well I started out last winter with a d30 swap and a soa in the rear with 33s and 4.10s got super hooked so this winter went to full width 8.8, f250 Dana 44 five lug conversion, 4.88 gears, Spartan locker front, welded rear, diy beadlocks, 35" km3's 1350/1354 doubler. Stretched the front wheelbase about 5" forward.full hydro steering, finished last night but still have some front fender trimming to do and some misc things to call her good!
When I first bought my Optima it was interesting to see how much unused space was left since the stock battery is so large, and the Optima so small. After a little bit of thinking I figured I could probably get two Optimas in the same location as my stock battery. Optima in stock location: New dual batt. tray vs. stock batt. tray: Different angle of new tray (still need to be cleaned up and painted): Had to hack out a bit of fender well and relocate the ABS module: View from wheel well (without plastic liner in): And all together: Now I just have to decide how I want to wire it all in. Oh, and figure out how to keep them in place. I was thinking about a strap, but I'm worried that it wear...
This is my Ranger. There are many like it, but this one is mine. I'm updating the beginning of the thread with how it progressed. To follow along, you can see some of it here, the rest is on The Ranger Station and Pirate. Just search D-Ranged. This thread isn't much different than what you would see on those forums, but a couple people asked me to post up about it on here too, so here you go. Also, I'm in the process of fixing all the bad links to pictures. It started life simple. A 1 owner, ultra clean 94 4.0/5speed/4x4. I immediately removed the dear hoof wheels and installed some cheap aluminum ones. Then a few months later, I put on a small lift, but not the tires... hey, the 31s still had tread and I was a lance corporal that...
Hey Everyone!! I'm new to this forum as I just purchased a 1992 Ford Explorer as a prospect off road project!! I am pretty new to the car world so the more advice and simplified explanations the better. (I also LOVE tagged videos! As I am a very visual learner). After reading through many of your guys off road projects, I have been trying to figure out how best to go about modifying my Explorer. There are a few questions I had and they may seem a bit dumb but I really am just trying to learn as much as I can :) 1. What are your guys recommendations on tires? I've looked into Maxxis and M/T Baja Claw tires but haven't been able to even determine which tire size would be best. I am looking for something to give me the best ground...
Time to join the club. It took me almost two months to complete my project due to lag time of receiving parts, receiving the wrong parts, spending many hours at work (still at war) and tools breaking down. All were under warrenty but still... If it could go wrong, it did. Something always goes wrong with any project. I have built many rigs in the past but this SAS was the worst of my luck. Once everything was here the project went very well. So far this thing drives, tracks, and feels great. Tomorrow hopefully I'll get it out on the highway. Here's some of the hi-lights: Rear axle: 8.8 with 4.56 grears and Detroit locker SOA with AAL and Rancho RS9154 shocks ProCompStainless steel brake lines Comming soon: Disc brakes...
