Tires & Wheels

This is kind of a safety issue that I've noticied a few companies are having. My brother bought some Eagle Alloys for his Ranger and had them installed at the shop I work at (I didn't work on it thankfully). Anyhow, few months pass and he was coming home from college and his right rear wheel almost fell off. The lugs somehow backed off. Now - there's no hard evidence that it was because of the wheels needing to be retorqued - but what makes it harder is that he was up at Virgina Tech the day before with a damn UVA sticker in his back window. Pranksters - maybe? Anyhow, so he bought a new wheel and he was good to go. Months later I had to go to a 4wd shop and get some lug nuts and I noticed at the bottom a disclaimer: So...
...This is a compilation of info and links I have found very useful on this site, including items I have learned over the years...Just my favorite links to the noted subject's...:D ...The wheel size does not make the tire rub...The tire and backspacing cause/eliminate this...;) ...The preferred size wheel for the Explorer and Ranger is, 15"x8" 5-4.5 with 3.75 Backspacing...You can fit up to a 12.50" wide tire on this wheel.. ...If you look at the tire size and lift charts here, they will give you the correct amount of lift needed for minimal, to no rubbing with the stock size wheels,(15"-16" tall)...A 15x10 wheel basically will give you a deeper dished wheel and usually, the back spacing size they come with will cause the...
I, like many others, am running 31x10.50's on my 'plorer. Does anyone have wider 31's, like the 325/60 BFG's,11.50's or 12.50 Goodyear or MT tires. How much more room do the need than for a standard 31? I want the width for sand and mud, and this seems like a lot better option than more lift and taller gears.
First, You need to look at a car that gets really good mileage driving that for every weekday. Dead Link Removed I have some High spirit MT's that are made by Kelly-Springfield that I love. They are a little noisey but I don't think they are too bad. Mine are 31X9.50's on 15" rims(92 xlt). They seem to do really well so far in mud, but I haven't had very many chances to get off road yet. I would recoment MT if you are doing hill climbs. Hope this helps. ChrisW
I was just talking to the guy at the local tire shop and he was telling me that the BF Goodrich AT and the good year wrangler AT/s tires were terrible and that I was going to hate them for everyday use. Is this true anyone use these tires. Thanx Keith
Can someone tell me the back spaceing (or off set) needed to fit 33/12.5 tires, so as they would not rub on the front sway bar, and the inter fender wall on the rear. Wheels are 15 by 8. I have 31/10.5 now and they rub just befor full lock.
I've bought a 93' Explorer and i want to give it a chance to go off-road. Please help me to know which tires size are suitable without suspension or body lift kit . In the owner manual ford speak about 235/75/15 AT. Someone says that a 31/10.5/15 may run. Someone says that 30/9.5/15 is the maximum. Thank you for your answer.
I JUST TALKED TO ERIC AT DICK CEPEK AND HE TRIED ON 265/75-16 RAIDIAL A-S, ON A 1998 EB. HE SAID THEY FIT, THE STOCK ONES ARE 255'S. THAT SHOULD MEAN 31X10.50R-15 WILL FIT ON MY 1998 4DR XLT 4X4. I HOPE!!! HAS ANY ONE TRIED BFG ALL-TRRRAIN 31's ON A 1998 XLT 4X4? I HAVE THE STOCK ALUMINUM DEEP DISH 10 HOLE 15X7IN. RIMS. I also want to know if anybody has tried 32x11.50R-15 BFG A/T OR ANY OTHER 32'S ON THE STOCK XLT? DO YOU NEED TO TRIM THE FENDERS? [This message has been edited by JASONESQUIVEL (edited 04-14-99).]
Can anyone assist me in pricing a set of '92 Navajo rims. I have had someone ask me to state a price but I am not sure what they are worth. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks, ------------------ Sandy Balzarini n1mau@gis.net [This message has been edited by Sandy (edited 04-14-99).]
The stock tires on my Mountaineer squeal like crazy, even at low speeds. Is this a problem with the tires, or is it a general characteristic of the truck? I have noticed a lot of other Explorers and Mounaineers use Firestone tires, would a switch to a diffrent brand or size make a diffrence? I'd like to keep my stock rims. ------------------ 1997 Mercury Mountaineer Mods: Bug shield, K&N, and more to come
I had just bought a 1997 Explorer and wanted to upgrade to the Pirelli Scorpion A/Ts..31X10.50X15 and the fellow at Town Fair Tire says that it will kill my all ready poor gas milage..12-15..because the computer chip is set for the 235/75R 15s that are on it..is there any way to change this so i can go with the taller and much better tires and not hert my milage? My Explorer is the 5.0 AWD and i love it dearly Dead Link Removed

I'm trying to stay under $100 a wheel.. and do i have to do anything special with the front hubs <hence the center caps> Thanks Frank
