Were the Cologne V6s used in any applications over there that we don't get over here?? I've always wondered if there were any other transmissions which would work behind these things...

100% of the 4.0 production has ben sent to the US ever since for Explorer, Sport Trac, Mustang and Ranger production.

The only other tranny I know about is the Mazda M5OD that fits the 4.0. Was the tranny that came with the M/T Explorers up to 2003.

A4LD, and the variant of it after '95. Variants of it are still used today.
 






Too bad... I hoped there may have been something better out there.

Business politics and foreign trade policies aside, this makes me wonder if the business process could be further improved (and cost reduced) by producing the blocks within the continental US instead.

Oh and also, I thought the 4L Cologne was also used by Land Rover?

I like the Cosworth 2.9L, just for the visual effect alone. I wonder if a similar DOHC treatment could be done to the SOHC 4.0L?

From the looks of this....yes. :D Although the article is for a OHV to DOHC 4.0 OHV into 4.0 24v COSWORTH

As the topic. It's based upon a 93:ish 4.0 bottom end and the rest of the bits are from a 2.9i 24v BOB cosworth. Just missing a few bits to be able to put it all togehter. But here are a few old pics from how a few bits fit together.

So the 4.0 was used in LR3 Landrovers... Does that mean there is a ZF tranny that will fit our bellhousing bolt pattern? I dug around a bit, but couldn't find a match for the tranny that went behind a LR's 4.0 Cologne engine.

Hmm....let me see if I can help figure out what transmission was used in the land rover LR3. I've done a light research and they keep it "hidden". Just says a 6-speed manual or 6-speed auto... Reading the Land Rover Forums their transmissions seem to be another sealed unit that "never needs the fluid changed".

It's a ZF 6HP26 6-spd auto.
You don't want it. Just from what I've found in the last couple hours, it's a nightmare, full of problems. Even if you did want it, you can't have it. It employs something called a Mechatronics unit, which is a TCM in/attached to/part of the valve body. It is programmed, at the ZF factory to ONLY work in the exact make/model it is intended for, and it is very dependent on data sent to it over the CAN bus, from the other sensors on the vehicle. In short, it is absolutely impossible to make it function outside of the vehicle it was originally intended for.
