    Monitors not completing test

Pull out your PCM and write down the numbers off the ford label.Go to your local big junkyard and match one up.An alternative is to look on Ebay.I have bought many used computers off the bay in the last 10 years with good success. All the numbers off the label should match to have the best chance...

    Clunking noise

I just fixed the same kind of noise in my F150.The bolts that hold the engine mounts to the frame were loose and everytime I accelerated from a start I would get a clunk.

97 Explorer EGR Excessive Flow Question

You need to find a way to read the EVP voltage.I have had problems where the voltage was too high with the EGR valve closed with all new parts.I have found that a little grinding of the EVP sensor pintle will lower the voltage to an acceptable range.Don't grind too much off at one time.A little...

    1999 Explorer Check engine light

I was in an Advance Auto Parts store in Schenectady NY today.A cute young girl came in and asked the store counter person to scan her car for codes out in the parking lot.He advised her that it was now company policy that employees no longer can provide this service. He handed her the hand held...

    Monitors not completing test

I would try a different PCM.If you have no codes for that long a period of time there is no reason that all your monitor should'nt set.You may have a bad computer.

AWD, removed front DS now i have a vibration??

I think that I have read here on this forum that driving without the front driveshaft can cause damage to the 5.0 AWD transfer case. Also,I think that your truck can posssibly roll away when parked if the d-shaft is out.Be careful parking on a hill and always set the parking brake while the shaft...

    Replacing steel brake lines

Heres a trick that I was taught by an oldtimer many years ago. When you open up the brake system all the fluid will gravity bleed out of the master, the abs unit, and the lines. To prevent this unhook the battery and take a stick and jam the brake pedal down about halfway. This will block the ports...

    faulty gas gauge

My 97 does the same things on hills. If the change in the guage readings is drastic on hills, you might need a new anti-slosh module. You have to pull the speedo cluster out to change it.The module is a small printed circuit board that slides into the back of the cluster on the left side.

    Air Bag Code 42 nightmare

My airbag light has been bilnking a code 42 since I bought the ex 2 years ago.I finally got tired of the light being on (and the airbags not working in an accident)so I bought some used sensors on fleabay.Being that the code 42 pertains to the sensor on the left front I figured that would fix...

    How many miles??

192,x.. miles on my ,97 5.0 AWD.Runs perfect, does'nt use oil, exhaust manifolds a little noisy on a cold start, new torque converter and used low mileage transfer case put in last year.I would not hesitate to hop in this truck right now and head cross country.

Brakes just went out, fluid on the ground

250-1000 dollars to fix it if you take it to a shop. Most mechanics hate this kind of work and won't do it unless they get paid for their aggravation. If you try to do it yourself you will see why they charge so much for this shi@#y job.

    Replacing Multifunction Switch

Just opened up my switch yesterday.I could see where the old grease mixed with the copper filings to create a short. My switch would create a buzzing noise under the dash when I tried to signal to the right. One tip.Make sure when you reassemble the switch that you engage the dimmer lever black...

rear wiper not contacting the entier window

The wiper arm can only travel so far towards the glass before a mechanical stop limits it's travel.Flip the arm away from the glass and you will see where the two metal pieces hit together to stop the travel.Grind or file(a dremel tool works great here)the stop to allow the travel to...

    Fuel filter, spark plugs

Believe it or not my ex still has the original ford numbered wires on it.192K miles and runs perfectly.

    Fuel filter, spark plugs

I change the fuel filter once a year on my ex.If the plugs are original at 99k it's time to change them.I just did mine on my 5.0.It's easier if you jack up the front of the truck and pull off the front tires. You can then go through the wheel wells with a long extension and a wobbly plug socket...

rough idling once in a while

I very rarely see bad O2 sensors on fords unless they have been bathed in coolant from a head gasket failure. Most times as stated above O2 codes can be traced back to vacuum leaks. The operating parameters for the OBDII system are very tight and just a small variation from "ideal" will light up...

    Gas gauge fluxuation

A bad slosh module can also cause a fuel guage to not work at all.If you are thinking about dropping the tank to change the sender always test the guage first.Pull the connector off the sender and plug it into a known good sender.Turn on then key and have an assistant watch the guage while you...

The best brand of windshield wipers????

I have used the Bosch Icons on all my vehicles since 2006.They last a long time and work great.

How to use cheap, non-chipped keys in a truck that requires a chipped key.

That must be why a parked F-250 on the street in Texas and Arizona lasts just a short time before being stolen and then disappearing across the border to Mexico. They are a lot easier to steal without the PATS key system.

    Keyless entry question

My 97 ex has keyless entry with the pad on the outside of the door. When I bought the truck a couple years ago it came with a key fob.It would not work to lock or unlock the doors.I got the number off the keyless entry module and the system works properly when I use the keypad. When I tried to...

    I'm VERY impressed...snow story

My 97 V-8 AWD is amazing in the snow.My stock size all season tires are about worn out and it still goes great in deep snow. The LSD in the rear and the viscous coupler in the t/case work great together. With real tires,it would be an animal.

    Another egr disaster!

If you are referring to the hard plastic vacuum line the answer is yes.Just get some small diameter rubber hose(squirter hose maybe)to repair the break.

question about cold start!whine for like 2mins until lil warm

Try changing your power steering fluid and put some lucas p/s addative in it.I did this on my 97 ex.It did not eliminate the niose but it got about 50% quieter. It steers a little better too.

    Replacing steel brake lines

Brake work should not be your first venture into car repair.Start with something simpler that does'nt have the risk of a brake failure or a crash if your work is substandard.I just replaced most of the lines on my 97 ex and it was a pain to do even with a lift. You need to find an experienced...
