    Garage rip-offs

Here's my little story.. I was working for a chain tire store years ago during college, as a service tech. One day a woman pulled up with some kind of road hazard claim on her tire. We pulled the car around, got the wheel off and started inspecting it. The service manager told me to stick a...

    AC Leak

best bet is to load the system with flourescent dye and check with a blacklight. The Auto Zone kit works pretty well. A big leak is not hard to find once you throw dye at it.

Message center w/o EATC into base model

After looking at about thirty different Explorers and Mountaneers in all different trim levels, I came to a conclusion.. the message center was apparently only offered in combination with the digital EATC. Is that correct? I want to replace my base model Sport dash harness with the XLT or EB...

    Running Lean

A quick way to verify a vacuum leak.. hook up a scan tool and watch the fuel trims. With an intake leak you'll have high short and long term fuel trims (STFT & LTFT) at idle, and they will quickly drop down to around zero when you get around half throttle. "High" to me is anything over 10 or 15...

    EGR Tube Nut wont budge

Aerokroil has never let me down.. sometimes it takes a few days and a propane torch but it will eventually move. if you can get a socket on there, do it! a torque adapter style wrench would probably be a good fit. I'm not sure what size that nut is, so here's a generic Snapon link for the torque...

    How is your fuel mileage?

Assessment of my cost of ownership - 2001 XLT 4x4 V-6 SOHC

On a side note.. about what mileage did you replace those intake gaskets? I know everyone ends up needing them.. but I don't recall seeing any average mileage number when doing the job. Your costs per year sound great.. I think the 2nd gen Explorers have quite a lot going for them to make...

2000 Mountaineer with auto lamp mirror

It just takes a little more patience and wiggling it. Push the clip up against the mirror, away from the glass and try to get the mirror to slide up. You could always shoot a quick squirt of WD40 or something into it.

Your fuel trims look good to me.. looks like #4 isn't firing at all. Pull the wire off the EDIS module with engine running and watch for sparks. Voltage on bank 2 sensor 2 looks out of range, it shouldn't be more than 1 volt.

    99 Sport with induction & EVAP leaks - P0455

Well after driving long enough for the EVAP and fuel/air monitors to test, I got another MIL, with three DTCs.. the same P0455 large evap leak, and two come-backs: P0171 and P0174, system too lean banks 1 and 2. Awesome! Glad to see it's lean on both banks, that makes troubleshooting a lot...

    Motor Tune Up Thread

I can't recall where I read it, but I read an article that talked about preventative maintenance(PM) during WW2 on aircraft. There was a significantly greater failure rate of aircraft that had just been PM'd compared to those that weren't... over 50% if I remember correctly. While there are...

    P0141 p0147

That doesn't sound right, you said you had a P0304 misfire cylinder 4 code (bank 2), but ended up finding an induction leak on bank 1. Does your scan tool let you look at PIDs? I would be curious to see what percent misfire each cylinder has.

Wanted Recommendations for repairing surface rust

There is no simple one-can fix to rust.. any rust. To remove rust and prevent it from coming back up, every last little speck of it has to be gone.. even down in the pores of the metal. The best way is to spot sandblast, wash with metal prep, epoxy primer, high build primer, and topcoat. Is it...

    99 Sport with induction & EVAP leaks - P0455

Today's subject is a 1999 Explorer sport 2WD with auto transmission and 4.0 OHV. It has 190K miles with no known maintenance or history.. I just bought the truck, it had a P0455 large EVAP leak, P0304 Cyl 4 misfire, and a Bank 2 lean code. Both LTFT bank 1 and 2 are right around 25, and the...
