2002 4.6 Engine - Why unique? (UPDATE: Engine Swap Complete)

As some may have read, my wifes XLT likely has a spent motor. I'll have it confirmed one way or the other sometime today.

I'm preparing for the worst and considering my options:
  • Sell the truck less engine
  • Replace engine with used, rebuilt or crate unit and sell or keep
  • Part the truck out

As I research the possibility of a replacement engine I'm finding that many are saying the '02 4.6 is unique to this one model year. Of course that makes the price go up.

After a search here on the forum I've found bits and pieces of info such as:

"You can use ANY 4.6 as long as it's a 2 Valve engine, however, the block in your Ex is aluminum not all 4.6's have the aluminum block, some are iron and weigh about 200-250lbs more.... "

****** WARNING - Apologies in advance for the many questions. Hopefully this will help others in the future as well. ************

So, my esteemed forum brethren, what are the differences between the '02 and other years that make it unique? Simply what is stated above? Will other years mount directly to the trans? Are there unique accommodations on the block for all the '02 sensors?

If using all the accessories from the ceased engine on the donor engine will this negate any unique aspect of the '02 engine? Will it be mostly plug-n-play or will I need to have computer work done after the transplant?

As always thanks in advance for feedback.

Just want to share my experience in sourcing a replacement engine...

As it turns out I focused my search on '02 engines exclusively. All indicators pointed in this direction so I figured I'd take the path of least resistance.

I scoured Craigslist, Ebay, local/regional salvage yards, internet / local rebuilders and I ended up using www.car-part.com
FYI: On the site you can set the range you're willing to search within. For a relatively unique item like a 1 year only engine I did a countrywide search.

During my search I called quite a few sellers who had "Grade A" engines. I finally lucked out with a gentleman down south with a 60k mile unit. He explained to me that he didn't even have to tow the donor car as it was a partial roll over and he was able to drive it to the yard to be dismantled. Aside from a guarantee he provided a Carfax showing the vehicle history with recent inspection and miles. He also accepted Amex which provides additional protection.

I can tell you that I was close to buying other engines but each time my gut told me not to....I just didn't believe the mileage, engine year and/or guarantee claims. One guy stands out as being especially aggressive when looking for payment after vague descriptions and info.

So, I ended up paying $1200, delivered. The yard owner couldn't have been nicer.

I had the replacement shipped directly to a local wrench who did and amazing job with the swap.

I picked up the Exp this morning and it runs beautifully. Fingers crossed.

I couldn't be happier.

Now onto the solenoid pack and rear fluid change.
