Yes & Yes, some come with the extra cooler and yes you can install an after market one ;)

Yes, the tow package ( and possibly other packages ) came with the stock Ford tranny cooler.

You can indeed add an extra cooler in addition to the factory one or simply add one if your truck did not come equipped with one,

I have the factory cooler on my '99 and added an additional cooler too.

how about a 91-94?

where could i get one? and how hard is it to install?

I got my B&M tranny cooler from Summit Racing.
At the same time I got a Perma-cool filter with a temp guage.
With basic mechanical knowledge you can instal both.

Here is mine. You can see the factory cooler to the top.

My cooler lines go into the radiator AND into a cooler in front of the radiator, does this mean I got 2 from the factory? Would it be overkill to have 3?

Yes, it appears that you have the factory cooler and no, it would not be overkill by any means; I have 3 on mine.

Yes you have the correct factory set up.
No, adding another won't hurt one single bit.
I added one.
Most tranny failures come from over heating. Any additional will only help.

FWIW some just skip the radiator lines and use just the two aux coolers.

PLEASE do not skip the factory cooler and just run an auxillary cooler... That is a recipe for disaster! The factory cooler still takes the brunt of the workload and as far as I know, no auxillary cooler can completely take care of the cooling requirements for an automatic transmission, except perhaps one that is sized almost the same size as the factory radiator. Transmissions build heat at the most inoportune times, like sitting at stoplights holding the vehicle against the brake - a time when NO cooling air is moving past the air/oil coolers. Your factory cooler (inside the radiator) doesn't rely on air movement to continue to cool, it uses the water for that purpouse. Most aftermarket coolers specify that they are to be installed IN LINE WITH the factory cooler.

I'm running a Hayden cooler - spaced from the front of my radiator by about an inch (helps a lot for air flow) and as large as I could stuff in front of my radiator (their "motorhome" size). My tranny never goes above 160 now, even on a long pull or when pulling another Explorer on a two-axle trailer behind my own... a pretty good test if I don't say so myself...

Oh - for a reasonably priced transmission temp guage, just get a mechanical water guage, and weld a pipe fitting into the pan. I did mine for under $20. No reason that I can see for spending the $50 for a regular trans temp guage. They don't do anything different than the water temp guage and mine has worked perfectly.

any truth to this?

There are plenty of coolers on the market that can cool an auto trans byu itself, HOWEVER these are the expensive ones nobody uses.
I would not trust a Hayden cooler to be the only thing cooling my auto either, in series witht he stock trans cooler, yes, but if you want cooler only, no stock built in cooler in the rad, thenyou need like a Setrab or top of the line B&M etc.

I see people all the time go through the trouble of upgrading the cooler and trans pan etc and never add a temp gage either :) Thats the first thing I would do on any automatic equipped vehicle used for anything more then average daily driving

How do you know your factory cooling package isnt already doing a fine job?

I just added a temp sensor to mine, and with the stock set-up around town I never get above 110 F. I haven't had it off road yet.

Wow, that's low. Where did you mount the sender? What instrument is it?

Thanks ....

The sender is after the second cooler, so that tells me the coolers are working. I had it up a really steep long grade today and it got up to about 150 F. It is a B&M gauge and sender.

Interesting, those temps are a lot lower than I have observed.

Normal city driving in mine often yields 150-165 F.

I put mine before the coolers so I know what temp the fluid is coming out of the tranny (worst case).

how do you know if the coolers are working? The temp of the fluid coming out of the tranny will be much hotter (off the gauge?). How hot does it come out at?
