According to a repair shop I took the explorer to, my Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS) needs to be replaced. After buying the Chilton's manual and a scanner, I read in Chiltons that Vin X 4.0L OHV motors from 91-95 don't have a CPS. Can anyone confirm this? I'm trying to trouble shoot some wierd issues, and this may be at the heart of the whole thing. If they don't have a sensor what determines the timing? Currently my spark advance is 22 degrees at an idle speed of 788 RPM. Does this sound right? I'm trying to find where in the Chilton's manual this is covered. Thanks.

I have a 95 and it has a Camshaft position Sensor, I know cause i managed to break it during an engine swap, they are expensive so make sure its that before you go getting one.

Yes it should have. It is at the rear of the engine where the distributer would have been and the timing can be adjusted. Maybe the sensor is fine just out of adjustment.

According to the Chilton's Manual, the sensor should be on the top of the engine near the Firewall. Can you see the sensor without taking off the Intake Manifold? I hate the stupid Chilton's manual because it covers so many years and so many models (Explorers and Rangers) that Its hard to figure my specific problem out. After the shop visit, I looked up the Cam Shaft sensor on the Ford Online Catelog and bought a genuine ford part off the net. I haven't been able to find the one on my Explorer. I did read a few other posts elsewhere on this list about the CPS but I still haven't been able to locate mine. I guess I could just start taking the intake Manifold, and Ignition coils off and start hunting for it, but I know I also need to find the alignment tool before I do. How do I know if it is my CPS that is bad? I'm getting a code 214, and it seems like my timing is off (spark advance at 22 degrees at idle speed of 788 RPM.

Took some pictures under the hood. I couldn't find the CPS in the front of the engine like the manual says. This is under the throttle body housing.

This is my best guess for the Camshaft position sensor. The manual shows it sitting on top of a shaft like in this discussion:

My sensor appears to be mounted vertically and doesn't look like it is adjustable. (as far as I can tell)

I bought Motorcraft Part #DU57 - Camshaft Position Sensor; MFI #F58Z12A112AA Shown in this picture, but it isn't the right part if the picture above actually shows the CPS. Can anyone confirm that this is the sensor?

Anyone need a brand new DU57 sensor? Obviously it won't work on my car. Guess I'll have to call the dealer tommorrw. I bought two more non-
Chilton manuals off ebay too, hopefully they will shed some light on this problem. Chilton Sucks!

I deleted your other post...you basically asked the same question.

It is located underneath the intake plenum, in back of the intake manifold. In my case, I had to take the intake manifold off to get the CPS out due to clearance issues with the intake manifold. Some people have been able to pull theirs straight up without taking the intake manifold off.

You will have to take the intake plenum off at the very least to access it.

Rockauto has the best price that I could find on this item. Bosch is the only company that makes it, though many companies sell it under their own name.

Fomhoire thanks for the link to Rockauto. Rockauto is actually the place where I bought the "Wrong" CPS. On Rockauto, if you look up 95 Ford Explorer with the 4.0L motor it tells you that you need the sensor I already bought. Now that I know I have the wrong sensor I have two questions.
1. How do I know that my probelm really is the CPS? The garage that I took the Explorer too was convinced after three visits that it was the CPS. After already getting $600 out of me for non-fixes I figured it was time to try myself. What should the Spark advance be (ballpark figure is fine) for idle speeds around 800 rpm?
2. Does this CPS type need to be aligned? If it does, how do you do it? The chilton manual talks about a plastic alignment tool, but I think it is for the DU57 type of CPS. -Can't wait to get my Ford Manual!

Bringing this up to the top.... I am looking for this sensor also on an OHV and I have looked at every discussion on this website. I cannot locate the darned thing.
