Hello all! I recently had to have some repairs done on my Explorer and I thought I’d share my experience in case anyone else encounters the same issue.
My check engine light came on. I used my code reader to clear the codes but the check engine light came back right away. The codes were:
0401 – Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
0402 – Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected
0405 – Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low
1405 – Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) Sensor Upstream Hose Off or Unplugged
The truck ran okay though, no major symptoms. If anything, it felt a little weak during hiway-speed acceleration (i.e. cruising at 60, accelerating to 70) and every once in a while felt like it was thinking about stalling. But I might have just been imagining all that after seeing the check engine light.
Actually, when the CEL came on a couple months ago, the only code was 0405. My mechanic said driving it wouldn’t hurt the engine, just might make it stall which never actually happened. The other codes showed up later.
I finally got around to taking it in this week. I told my mechanic I thought is was the EGR valve. He said it was more likely the DPFE or one of the hoses. Because the hoses are carrying exhaust, they use silicone hoses instead of rubber. Rubber apparently would deteriorate too quickly. But eventually the silicone hoses do too, and he thought it was probably a cracked or leaking hose.
After putting on his computer, it turned out to be the DPFE valve was bad. Replacement part cost about $62. Labor costs were $80 for the computer diagnostic scan and $64 to test and replace the DPFE sensor.
So all told I was out the door for a little over $200. Not too bad.
I just wanted to write this up in case anyone else finds this info useful some day. Maybe relieve the “How much is this going to cost me” uncertainty
Hope this helps!
