So I call my 3 local parts stores looking for a fuel pressure regulator for my '99 4.0 SOHC and nobody lists them. I'm thinking maybe a dealer item. I call and the dealer says Ford calls it a fuel dampner. I questioned the parts guy and he says this is what I need...about $85. Does this sound correct? I'm having fuel pressure problems and want to replace the correct part. Napa online does not list a regulator and neither does rockauto.com

Not sure when (what year) but ex's switch from a regulator (actual unit) to a computer control pumping so that there is no return line for "excess"... but it could be around your year. Hopefully someone will add. Dampner sounds like "plausible" part for the new "function". What tests did you do on your fuel system to determine your problem???

Aside: there is some good info here which backup the previous question.... from this it doesn't sound like the dampener relates to fuel pressure... directly... anyways,

No,you do not have an FPR.

It's my son's truck and it's in Texas and I'm in Vermont. I will be there in few days. Just trying to get some parts before I go. I will be able to check fuel pressures, etc. when I get there. Up to this point he's had to prime the fuel system prior to start by turning the key to the on position two or three times and then it runs just fine. I figured it was the regulator leaking or just not functioning correctly. Now it starts but quits after a few seconds. The pump is still running prior to crank. Maybe the filter? I hope it's that easy but trying to be prepared for the worst. Thx.

I'm thinking fuel filter, if not, fuel pump.

That also sounds like maybe the fuel pump is failing.

Good luck ....

Problem fixed!

If there's one thing I hate is doing a search and reading through problems similar to mine and not knowing how things ended up....so:

My problem was engine would start and run for a few seconds and quit. Connected a fuel pressure gage and it showed 10 psi. If I turned the key off and on several times I could get the pressure up to 30 psi but as soon as it started it would bleed down to less than 10 and quit. I replaced the fuel filter first. Make sure you have a 5/16 fuel line disconnect tool...I didn't so had to go get one. Filter was not plugged but looked like the original anyway. After, the pressure was not much better and still wouldn't run steady. I dropped the gas tank which was really not too hard. I did it in a parking lot, but I did have a floor jack. There's only 3 bolts. I know there are some posts on here about the pump hose connections being loose. I was hoping mine would be too and could just be tightened, but mine were tight. I ended up replacing the entire unit (pump, screen, regulator, sending unit, etc.) It cost about $120 for just the pump or $250 for everything. I bought an Airtex brand and it looked exactly like the original in every way...(O'reillys in TX). The pump fit perfectly and the tank went right back in place (the jack helped) and the pressure was a steady 65 psi after cycling the key a couple times to get the air out of the system. It ended up taking me about 4 hours. Hope this helps someone else.
