Looking to regear my "spare" set of axles up to 4.56, as I'm not all that happy with the 4.10's, plus other issues with the axles currently under my truck.

Anywho, is there a "preferred" brand of gears?
Checking out Randy's Ring and Pinion, the gears range from, what was it.. like $180 to $250 or so.

You have Richmond Gear, Yukon, Ford Racing, USA Standard, US Gear, I believe I saw a Strange, and I'm sure there's a couple other manufacturers.

now I know sometimes you get what you pay for, but sometimes more expensive does not always mean better.

I did some searching but couldn't find any brands being spoken well of or spoken down on.

recommendations?

ive never heard anything bad about yukons and that what i just got,but i got 4.88 just in case i ever put my 35s on plus i really want that torqy get up and go feel!

Ford racing, USA Standard, Yukon, and quite a few others are all made in the same foundry in Korea. Just as most axles are made in India. Your paying for what color box you want. :) Send me a PM w/ what your looking for and we'll take care of you as best as we can.

see, I was hoping to hear the exact same about a less expensive brand! :p:
The Yukons are either the most expensive, or the 2nd most expensive I believe.

that is good info. PM coming! :D

haha yea the real pricey part is the damn timmken bearings!!!why are you getting ride of your 4.10?

all the master overhaul/install kits I've seen are actually cheaper, or roughly the same price as the expensive R&P kits :dunno:

I'm not happy with the 4.10's. When I hit the highway to go out to my parents, I'm still having to turn O/D off a lot, unless I want to just jam the skinny pedal to get it to downshift, which I don't (especially in winter).

For as little driving as I do (I live 3 miles from work), I will be happier with the lower gearing.

Plus, issues with my current junkyard axles, thinking they need R&P work, so might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Plus the rear axle possibly having other issues (rear tires have toe to the left, but the axle housing has a thrust angle pointing right)

You might want to go to 4.88 also.every one I've talked to that has 33s and 4.56 has or wished they had done 4.88.there isn't much price difference but I hear the power is a where the big difference is

nah, definitely don't need something that low.
My junk is a mall-crawler.

YUKON

had bad luck with precision and a set of Ford Racing R&P for the 8.8, but it MIGHT have been the installer.......no problems ever with Yukon gears

Haha, wait you got the v8 and 4.10 and still don't have a lot of power?

hmmm..... what kind of issues did you have? chipped teeth? broken teeth? grenaded R&P?

you know the V8 doesn't put out much more horsepower and torque than the 4.0's, right? :p:

it surely doesn't help that I prolly have a set of the heavier 33's (TrXus STS are probably heavier than BFG tires)

O yea I know:Di personally don't have any problems with my motor with 3.73 and 33s so I can't wait to put my 4.88 in:burnout: just throwing this out there also have you checked your cables, maybe the butterfly isn't opening all way or got to much slack in the kickdown cable.might be something to check if you haven't allready:thumbsup:

I had the rear Ring gear lose teeth, Ford Racing 4.10 8.8
the precision gears up front broke teeth

both diffs and lockers setup by the same shop at the same time, both had to be re-done after two very short wheeling seasons, so it may not be the gears fault, but I figured I would share...

after that I went Yukon in my rig and the wifes... no issues at all

Since when is an extra 50 ft/lbs of torque not a lot?

Precision Gear was at one time a very good brand. Not sure what's happened to them since they got bought out a couple years ago though.

I've had good luck with Yukon as well though.
Nitro Gear is a newcomer to the scene that seems to be showing some promise (since Precision Gear went under, Nitro has taken up making many of our D35 gears). I haven't personally set any up yet, but patterns I've seen on other axles looked pretty good, and I haven't heard of any failing yet.

A set of Torque mosters would be cheaper and be all that he needs. :D

since I'm pretty sure my existing R&P are toast anyway, I don't think TM headers would help that :D
Except that I also have a body lift, so would then need to either copy what 410 did with lowering the steering shaft @ the firewall and slightly flattening a header tube, or figure some other way around that issue ;)

and 50lb/ft... while yes, that's a bit... but.. I dunno. Besides, I also plan to be trailering my Bronco2 WHEN it gets finished.
4.56 would surely help with towing.

guess I'll need to start doing more research on gears then. I was looking at those, but they're ~$80 more expensive than other brands.

And yes, I do know you SOMETIMES get what you pay for :p:

well no matter how you wanna look at it, I need a set of freshly built axles.

I do not have the money to get it done at a shop.
I also cannot be without a vehicle for more than a weekend.

which brings me to needing to buy gears, to install in the set of axles I have on my garage floor.

figured I might as well upgrade to 4.56's, since it a R&P job needs done anyway, and I already gotta buy the parts.

4.56 will be perfect with the steep OD in the 4r70w, 4.1 is not enough, 4.88 is too much for street truck

Ford Racing gears should hold up well in a 8.8, one would think, they are proven at the drag strip
