Only 5.5K and the car is overheating already. So I dropped at the dealer with a list of issues:
Overheat in slow traffic and AC blows hot air, more likely the two related
Rattle on cross wind at highway speed
MySync date is not correct, causing the clock to be an hour behind. Cannot find how to update the date
MySync app needs to be updated, couldn't update using the instruction from ford owner web site

Come-on FORD!!!!!!! overheating at 5.5K

Hey Andy, sorry to hear about your issues.

A couple of points. The Rattle on cross wind sounds like the A-pillar rattle that others have reported. Ford is aware of this. If you search this forum you will see a discussion about it, including the proper fix that your dealer should perform (in case you didn't already find it). I mention this because others have reported problems getting their dealer to fix this, but rest assured, that it is a known problem with a known fix.

Also, make sure you have the dealer update your MFT - latest version is 2.8, perhaps that may fix the clock issue.

Finally, if the dealer cannot fix the issues, or is giving you a hard time, PM Cori or Seni who are Ford reps that monitor this forum and have helped many members get issues resolved, their username is FordCustSvc (or something close to that).

My guess is that one of them will chime in when they see your thread :) They are very responsive and helpful.

Good luck!

The over heating is probably one of the fans, another well documented problem.

Regarding the clock, I had mine set to sync with the GPS, but when I got it updated, the daylight savings time defaulted to "off". This resulted in the time being off one hour.

This is set on the clock settings page, I believe.

As mentioned in the PM I sent this afternoon, be sure to include the events that led up to this as well, so that I may take a closer look at the situation. Thanks, I hope I can provide some assistance but I can make no guarantees.

Quick update:
Cooling fan is fixed, under warranty as no cost to me.
Will have to bring the explorer back once the dealer received parts to repair A-Pillar issue.
The date on mysync is still incorrect, it has Dec 18 on it right now. I will have to get the dealer look into it on the next visit. I have not check to see if dealer updated mysync or not.

Andy,

I’m really glad to hear that your cooling fan was fixed. Are you still having an A-Pillar issue or the incorrect date problem? Please let me know if you would like my assistance on either of those concerns!

Sigh....I am starting to lose confidence in the EX. Our EX overheated yesterday,. just dropped it off the dealer this morning. I haven't completely regret buying the EX yet, but if anyone come ask me if I would recommend buying one, I would probably say "hold on" or "no" just because of this overheat problem.

I was ok with most of the common problems we see here, like MFT delay, or A-pillar rattle... but overheat is probably the worst that could happen to a car, especially with 2k miles.

All the seals/gaskets now would be weaker than before, which this warranty work wouldn't even change 1 seal/gasket.

Overheating at 2400 miles

I will be dropping my '11 Limited off tonight to get looked at for overheating. Happened last night in 60 degree rainy weather while waiting in a drive through.

I am also having issues with the transmission- has a weird noise that begins in 2nd gear, can be harsh with up and down shifts too. The dealer replaced some "tube" but it did not help and now they want to replace another "tube" further back. The part was supposed to have been in Tues or Wed. Here it is Thursday with no call from them.

The update to 2.8 did resolve my Sync issues.

I was really looking forward to getting this car, and now I am regretting my decision. I too am one who will not be recommending this vehicle to anyone.

Why is it overheating and the fan failing? Is it because of the fan's design?

From my observations:
The new Explorer gets up to operating temperatures fast... My old Ex wouldn't even go to operating temperature at all, the needle would stay at the 1/4th position at the highest and in the summer, it'd go close to 1/3. When my EGR failed, then it'd go to normal operating temperatures. When I got it replaced, ran cooler than I don't know what. I did notice that the old Ex has a single giant fan that totally blew powerfully compared to the two fans on the new Ex. They just don't force as much air through the engine compartment.

Overheating

The guy at the shop thought it may be the cooling fan since it happened at idle both times. (Once again today.) Ex is back in the shop, and I have a rental.

Will post updates as I learn more.

Question to those with the Overheating Issue......

Does your Explorer have the Tow Package?

Question to those with the Overheating Issue......

Does your Explorer have the Tow Package?

No.

Just got the EX back, same problem as the others - faulty cooling Fan. I am still very unhappy about this problem because the long term health of the car is greatly decreased.

New cooling fan on order.

Supposed to be in on Monday. Discussed the transmission noise with the mechanic, he thinks that by the time all is said and done, I will need a new transmission. 2400 miles on my Limited.

Yay me.

I would like to hear others too. Any with towing package have the issue? I haven't yet (KOW) and I do have the towing. Heading out on a convoy the middle of June and would be embarrassed if the new Ex became the issue vehicle.

So far no issues here with overheating and with the towing package. Under 5k miles though but have pushed it hard.
