my 93 started making a new noise this morning and i can't track it down.

i want to call it a rattle, but it's more of a knocking-rattle 3 to 4 knocks (not tinney like an exhaust, but a solid knocking-rattle similar to a bad RA sound when on wash board), it happens everytime during start up(in park @ a stand-still) and only lasts for a few seconds, i can't dupilcate it once running (gunning engine, brake torque Fwd & Rvrs, etc.) it can be louder and a little longer @ times but of course never when i've had someone else to start the truck well i'm underneath:(

any ideas ????

I've seen exhaust systems shake so bad a start up, that they rattle/bang against the frame.

i had a friend push on the exhaust with his foot well i started my truck and it didn't make any difference, also the sound seems to be coming more from the front half of the truck.

It may be the cat. converter. Has it ever been replaced? My buddy went through this with his wrangler. It took us a while to finanlly find the culprit.

I know my Dad's '91 X made some serious noise for awhile and we figured out that the medal plate covering the CAT was loose. He got it spot welded and hasn't had a problem since. IF you find that to be the problem I also read you can attach two big hose clamps together and put it around the CAT and the plate, tighten and it will solve your problem. They also have clamps like that for sale especialy made for this problem.

smashboxed - my cat is original - but wouldn't make more of a tinney rattle sound?

dmasini - i removed the cat heat shield years ago - but thanks for the suggestion

How 'bout an engine mount going bad?? The motor shakes much worse on startup than it does revving the motor or driving it. However, I would think that would show up when you power braked it.

Loose starter motor??

Scary thought. Could it be the beginning of a rod knock that goes away once there is oil pressure?? If there is just a little too much clearance (couple of thou of an inch) between the rod/bearing/crank, it might knock until the oil gets in there under pressure and acts as a filler.

Update?

This sounds like the problem I have right now, well, sort of...

What was the culprit?

my problem was that my exhaust hanger from my dynamax cat back system's middle pipe had broken off and the muffle was banging on the right rear leaf spring front bolt, but only on start up - i would like to give cudos to dynamax, after a couple of emails they did do the right thing and sent me all new pipes for my system

Well thanks guy, I had pretty well the same noise you described but had written off the muffler as the source, After reading your post here I went back and looked closely at it, I figured even though it took alot to make it bang the frame I would try and get the muffler and pipes away from it a bit.
Seems to have solved a problem I thought was inside the engine!

Woohoo!
