4X4 Questions

I now live in upstate new york near Buffalo where it snows quite alot. I have never driven a four wheel drive car before until i finally got my 94 exploder. So... what is the difference between 4H and 4L and when are the proper times to use them? Im sure these questions had to have been asked before but i could not find them. The 4x4 system i have is the push button electronic control. I tried to use my 4x4 today but when i pushed the button nothing happened. Any help and tips would be great. Im just starting to understand cars and how they work and will be working at a mechanic this winter. Thanks all.

4h is good up to say 55 mph 4l should only be used under 10 mph or rock crawling

Im not 100% sure about your year but usually you need to be in neutral to shift in and out of low range.
