I hate the fact that my truck has an auto matic transmission. I've done a small amount of research and currently have decided that I want to swap in a m5od-r1 5 speed. If my research is correct, these are the transmissons that were included stock on 5 speed rangers(im not sure if the same holds true for explorers, but I'm assuming it does), but that on certain models they were offered with a lower 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear ratios. These models were:1988 & Up 4-Cylinder Rangers
1988-1992 2.9L 2WD Rangers
1991 - Up 3.0L Ranger
However, since the 3.0 and 4 cylinder bellhousings are different, my choice is a 1988-1992 v6 2wd ranger transmission. However, that leaves me with no transfer case. So, in short my question is will the tail shaft housing from a 4x4 m5od-r1 with the higher ratios bolt up to the back of one from a 2wd? If this makes no sense just tell me and I'll try to clarify tomorrow. Thanks!

The tail shaft for the 4x4 and the 2x4 are different lengths..so if your planning to switch you can only use the one that corresponds with your drivetrain
