I'm having a humming or whining noise coming from the output shaft, well in the vicinity. No clunking, shifting from park to drive or reverse is ok. no vibration yet but accelerating and pull my foot off gas pedal the noise gets louder. I had it on jacks and turned the driveshaft and the noise is coming from the slip yoke going into the extension housing. The u joints seem ok but it's hard to tell. I pulled the driveshaft and u joints seem ok. I kept the slip yoke engaged with the output shaft, turned, which produced a noise. I did notice the seal needs to be replaced. What symptom would a bad extension housing bushing cause? I'll have to get it assessed and go from there. 1PM today.

Time for a rear diff rebuild IMO

Thanks! I'm interested in what the drive train shop and the transmission shop will say? I have the 3.73 limited slip rear diff, not sure if that is a problem. I try to do what I can with limited tools, space and less than 3 years of any car maint experience. Things I do well is- I can hyper focus, read, watch a video. LOl Oh, I understand trouble shooting flow. Thanks again for your response.
As far as front end rebuild I posted pics of my rebuild. I put brake pads in once before this project. It only took me about 2 weeks longer than an experienced person would take.

^^^^ THIS!

I take it in tomorrow first thing. The driving has gotten worse so I'm not driving unless I really need to. I went from no vibrations to the classic u joint vibrations, especially when braking. I'm taking in all the details I can get. This whole DYI car thing is new but it's gotten under my skin in a good way. I took the drive shaft off last week the u joints didn't have obvious play. They did however just flop from side to side. I didn't think much of it at the time because I wasn't sure of the norm. after catastrophizing and thinking the worst, it may just be the u joints. I thought back when I replaced upper and lower ball joints, how sloppy the old one were compared to the new ones.

I'll post as soon as I get some feedback. I'm about 5 miles from Drive-line Vista and I'm hoping he's my last stop. 2 other shops guessed or missed it altogether. Since taking interest in doing things myself, there's been a rapid decline in my trust in repair shops and general advice. I've been forced to seek out specialist and to really consider the source of advice being given. Thanks again for the suggestion! How did you run across this shop?

There's a shop up north/here called "drive line service" and I just entered their name and your location and got lucky.

Obviously shops that specialize in this keep their name simple :)

Here's the good cheer holiday news update. First I wanted to thank everyone for input and feedback. Special shout to fast_dave for the Driveline Vista shop referral. So far the rear 3.73 limited slip differential is going to be rebuilt. I'll break that down in my next post. Rear axels replaced along with both u-joints. I'm still waiting to hear back on the slip yoke. I'm having them dig into the front bearings because one side was loose and the other is worse, it's also on the rack. They did mention that my work on the front end looks really good. So that's where I'm at any guess on a price? I'm in San Diego county if that makes any difference.

The work should be done early next week. I mentioned that I wasn't in a rush and he thanked me and said he'd it would reflect in the end. I had so many worn parts being replaced that I had to ask where he thought the noise was coming from? His reply was the differential but the only way to be certain is to repair one problem at a time but in this case it wasn't practical.

So here's the work being done so far. Rear axels, bearings and seals are being replaced. Rear differential is being rebuilt. This includes gear and pinion, bearings and cups. I was able to put my hands on the worn parts and the differential bearings were shot. The u-joints are being replaced with Spicer, slip yoke looked ok. The extension housing bushing and seal are being replaced. This brings the cost to just over $1600. The front wheel bearings, inner and outer have life but i said replace for a few hundred more. I'll post the exact amount and outcome as I go.

I had asked another to check the wheel bearings twice since April. My rookie mistake was not being clear what that may have meant. I thought things would be pulled completely apart and inspected. I think they checked for play and any grinding or grit. Again, it wasn't clear to me so I will be clear going forward.

Update on the work done recently. The total cost was 1663.95 which seems ok but it's hard to get an average price. I did notice the total labor was 5.3 hrs and billed at $585 and the parts were priced at $996. After looking at the invoice more closely I'll have to get clarification if the front wheel bearings have been done. I haven't driven it much but I can tell the handling is much better. I'm still concerned with the noise the output shaft was making when I turned by hand(using the slip yoke). More shall be revealed.

The question would be: Would the rear axle replacement include install kit or is it the listed bearing kit. Also, even though I don't have the knowledge to complete the work isn't the biggest problem. Space, tools along with it's my only car considerations. As a disabled veteran it would have taken me weeks to complete the job. Trust me it hurt to pay that much. It's all relative, like going to the store for food vs being self contained by growing an slaughtering your own food. Off to work on my 95 P30 chassis.
