DIY HomeLink visor garage door opener 2014 Explorer

Just purchased 2 home link garage door openers from ebay for wife's new 14 Explorer & my 10 f150. The visors are almost identical to take apart & install these modules (the only problem was they glue the plug to the headliner in the new Explorers & can be a PIA to get out) . The homelink from the dealer can be pricey so this is a cheaper alternative. These modules are a "dime a dozen" on-line ($15) & will fit most cars. No more bulky remotes with dead batteries!!

Was going to post pics but there is not an attachment button on this forum! I did post pics from my acct. on the f150 forum.

Welcome to the Forum The best engines.:wavey:
I'm not sure which model you have. It would help the members if you added the model to your profile so that it shows in the left margin when you post. Since you didn't have the OEM visors with the Home Link buttons I'm guessing it isn't the Limited. You can use the Manage Attachments button and post directly from your computer etc., if you take out a $20 Elite membership and it would also help to cover the costs of keeping the Forum up and running. Other than that you can visit the New Member Forum and check out the 'sticky' section on how to post pictures.

2014 Explorer XLT Sun visor uprade....

Newbie here, how do you remove the trim cover on the Driver side sun visor to access the mounting screws? I have acquired a Home link visor and want to swap them out. Thanks great forum.

Welcome to the Forum insaaa.:wavey:
As indicated in my PM, I have merged your thread with this existing one. Check out post 15 to see if the info you need is there.

An idea I plan on using from my motorcycle is to enclose my garage door opener in a small plastic water tight box running two wires out. One wire is ground, one to my bright lights. I can come home, flash my lights and bingo. Did the same for my Goldwing.

So I can drive over, do the flashing light thing and the door will open for me too?

The high beams send momentary power to the opener.

That is nice but that means anyone can open your garage door by doing the same thing. If someone pulls in to your driveway with their high beams on, the door automatically opens, and if they drive away, the door stays open? Doesn't sound as if that is very secure.

Boy, you are not reading my posts and thinking it through. My opener is in the plastic enclosure under my hood, secure. Hot goes to brights, negative to ground. If I flash my brights it sends power to my opener under my hood and opens my door.

Now do you understand?

You are correct Mike. I misread your initial post thinking that the unit was mounted by the garage door. Reading comprehension was obviously not in full force this morning. Sorry for all the extra posts. That seems like a very unique and ingenious setup. :)

It just pulls loose so you can access the the screws, then pull the upholstery loose to access the connector. When you screw the visor back it holds the upholstery.

If you want to save a fair bit, you can also buy the home link module for $20 and connect it to the visor vanity lights. I don't have pics showing exactly how I did it , I was trying to get it done quickly before it got . Toughest part was figuring out how to open the visor. But basically steps are :
1. Buy homelink with rolling codes off ebay http://www.flickr.com/photos/96153954@N07/13135431213/in/photostream
2. Undo the stitching along the side of the visor http://www.flickr.com/photos/96153954@N07/13135320953/in/photostream
3. Slightly open up the plastic visor and undo the clip from the inside
4. Cut out the homelink outline
5. Get power from the vanity mirror http://www.flickr.com/photos/96153954@N07/13135486544/in/photostream
6. Close it all up http://www.flickr.com/photos/96153954@N07/13135484324/in/photostream

Filzam, did you buy a used home link?

I quickly checked out my current visor 2014 XLT (no homelink). It feels like the cut-outs are already there underneath the fabric.

Yeah I think it's there as long as you have the vanity mirror with light. Just cut that out after removing the fabric.
