My 2001 Explorer 5.0L AWD has developed a clicking sound from under the hood. It's there all the time but get louder under acceleration and the speed of the clicking speeds up along with engine speed. Any ideas?

Can you isolate it? A mechanics stethoscope works well and a large screwdriver can be used in a pinch (hold the handle to your ear and touch the tip to different parts of the engine)

A video of the sound can help with a diagnosis too.

Remove the serpentine belt, is the noise gone? If so, now you have narrowed the possibilities. Spin all the accessories and tensioner and idler till yuo hear the clicking.

Could it be the A/C clutch engaging and disengaging?

Exhaust Manifold gasket would be my bet.

You're probably right! I noticed he posted in May and that's right about when I start using my A/C here in Southern Oregon.
