Ohhhh man, this is crazy...
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer 4x4. As soon as the cold weather started I have been having a very strange problem. My SUV isn't idling correctly any more. When I start it up, the lights and radio turn completely off inside the cabin, then it starts up. It goes up to about 800 RPM, then drops down to about 300 RPM, and then it continually bounces back and forth between the two about twice a second.
I also noticed that turning the air conditioning on or off can affect this problem, but doesn't make it go away. Eventually the SUV stalls out, and once that happens, I get "Check Engine", "Check Battery", and "Check Gauges".
I have no idea what is causing this. I have seen several people suggest that it's a sensor, but I think it may be something in the fuse box in the engine compartment near the firewall (that contains the fuses and relays). I hear a clicking noise near the relays and throttle body when the truck stalls out.
Also, as a side note, when I turn the AC on and off, I'm not seeing an idle change or hearing the compressor turn on. Could a stuck AC compressor or fan cause this bouncing of the idle, or is it simply an O2 sensor or something silly??!?!!?
