funny noise coming from rear

Hi... just registered and love this site with a passion..very informative and simple, can anyone help me with this problem..my 2002 ford explorer xlt has a funny noise coming from over the driver side rear wheel, sounds like a pump that's unhook or some broken gear spinning, you can hear the noise when the key is in the on position car not moving... noise not associated with movement of wheel.....please can anyone help out a new member, any help will be grately appreciated.
