In the past few weeks my explorer has been idling rough and a considerable loss of power is experienced. In the morning I notice this the most I try to reverse and it takes a lot to get it moving and the exaust is loud and smells like gas.
A very small backfire noise is heard when I push on the gas but after about 10mins of driving that doesn't happen anymore.
I'm pretty much clueless as to what might be wrong. I can't afford to take it in and have it fixed so I'm hoping I can fix it myself but without knowing whats to fix I'm kind of SOL.
Can anybody give me some ideas.

Sounds like it might be a fuel pressure regulator

Do you know if I test the codes will that show as good or bad. Or is there a good way to test the pressure regulator.

You can check the vacume line on the fuel pressure regulator there should be no gas in it.If you have the codes scanned it might tell you o2 sensors too if it is the FPR and you let it go too long it will wreck your o2 sensors.:(
