no reverse, found this in pan

reverse has always (had the car 6 months) slightly hesitant to engage,
then today when my wife was in a car park, she selected reverse and heard a bang and then no reverse,
i just removed the pan and found this,
anyone know what it is????

That is a spacer that is part of the pan gasket to keep it from compressing too much. It is normal.

i just put a screwdriver up the servo hole and it looks like the band is snapped,
am i right in thinking that if it's just sloppy up and down that it's snapped?
there was no springyness to it,

Matching that with the description that your wife provided, I would say yes the band is probably broken.
