My recently bought '94 vehicle (5.0L HO) has had it's smog pump bypassed using a shorter drive belt. The air diverter valve has been removed, but both check valves are still present.

My question is, aside from emissions violation (no test or inspection in my location), how would operation without the smog pump affect fuel economy?

Would it be recommended that I put it back in service?

Consequences to the engine from operating without it, if any?

Thanks for any thoughts! imp

Think of it as a belt driven high volume air pump that puts clean air into the exhaust to make the emissions reading out the tailpipe lower. It doesn't affect the engine performance in any way and bypassing it is almost like bypassing an a/c compressor that's on all the time.
