Tailgate lock issue

I have a 2010 Explorer. When I lock the doors with the keyfob, a loud grinding noise comes from the tailgate lock, and the tailgate does not lock.
Has anyone had this problem? Will a new locking mechanism fix the issue? I assume this is related to a water leak and corrosion...
Is this something I could tackle myself, or should I have the dealer fix?

I haven't had the panel off this gate before, but on my first and second gen's it seemed like it would be a straightforward job. Definitely sounds like the lock actuator though. While you're in there, I would also find out where water is entering and try to seal it up to prevent more problems.
