I was on uhauls website today to reserve a 4x8 utility trailer... I'm moving in September and everything wont fit in the back of eddie... when I selected my tow vehicle, all their trailers stated not available so, I call them up to set up a reservation... they basically told me that they will not rent a trailer to anyone pulling it with a ford explorer. when I told her my vehicle is more than adequate to tow such small light trailer she told me its not the the vehicle is incapable but, the cost to defend in a lawsuit for a trailer and explorer combination... What gives? has anyone had this problem before?

If I had an accident pulling their vehicle wouldn't my car insurance cover damages to it? further more I carry a million worth of liability coverage on my vehicle (I do the occasional oversize load escorting, that was one of their requirements for the chase/lead vehicles) im assuming their trailers are not worth that much.

it sucks for sure but if you had a Mercury Mountaineer they will rent you a trailer even if they are the same vehicles!!! This is why I built my own trailer!!!

yup, its funny. the huge 6x12 foot trailer they would rent to my dads Caprice but not my explorer.. when I moved. so i picked it up with that and then towed it the 2,000 miles when i moved with my Ex. my Ex towed it like nothing. well it was pretty heavy full but still. very impressed on how it towed it.

I had the same issue with U-haul. Ever though the issue is with the OLD generation EX. You'd figure that all they need to do is have you sign a liability waiver. U-haul's arrogance is why I WILL NEVER rent from them. Try PENSKE or Budget Truck Rental.

U-Haul is so stupid. They could specifiy that the limitation is to certain model years. In 2000 when I had a 99 Mountaineer V8 with the defective Firestones, that Ford replaced at their cost (the tire shop technician actually slashed the old tires with a knife in front of my eyes so they do not get resold) I rented a tandem axle 6x12 trailer from U-Haul with no problems.

A few years ago, as bandit mentioned, I had a friend pick the trailer up using his F250. I hauled it using my 2002 EX which had the tow package, from UT to AZ. When I turned it in at a U-Haul facility I was ready with a cover story but they didn't say boo.
