Water Leak | Page 23 | Ford Explorer Forums - Serious Explorations

Got my Explorer back last night. Apparently my leak was due to a bad seam in the rear driver side window and was resealed. The dealership kept it overnight to ensure the sealant dried and then rechecked it the next day. It has just started raining now so I will check on it in a bit and keep my fingers crossed.

Initial look inside the car showed no leaks, but driving around later and looking in again, I saw 2 damp spots. The problem is it stopped raining at that point and I am not sure if I had wet fingers from opening the hatch a little while earlier. Tomorrow I am bringing it to the car wash and will look after it comes out.

Leaker

Well I have a leaker only 4700 Miles on my 2013 it's leaking
Third row seatbelt area at dealer bad body seem hopefully they will fix it.

Let me know how things go at the dealership, zac0490. I'll keep an eye on this thread, but feel free to contact me if you need any assistance.

Buyback from Ford

I urge everyone who reads this thread to open up their spare tire compartment after a rain and check to see if water has pooled there. If there is any hint of water in the compartment report the leak immediately!

Our ordeal is over. Ford was not able to repair the leak in our Explorer. After 13 trips to the dealer, 143 days out of service where the Ex sat in the dealers service bay and we drove loaners they couldn't find a lousy leak. The interior was pulled out and put back in time after time until everything shook and squeaked when we drove it. Ford bought back our Explorer, moldy carpets and headliner that had swelled from soaking up water, but in hindsight we learned that by not reporting it earlier we lost a lot of money. A loss of Approx. $0.36 per mile! When we turned our Ex over we lost over $8400! So once again, I urge everyone who reads this thread, If you see or suspect a water leak, REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY to your dealership so that its documented.
So long Explorer Owners, Best of luck to all of you.

Thing to remember is that statistically very few do leak. I was at the dealer with a friend the other day and felt 10+, not one wet and it had rained pretty hard the day before. Not to say that some don't leak, just that it's no where near as common as this thread leads you to believe.

Ted, I'm buying a 2011 Limited and I got a little nervous after reading this thread. But it's been raining a lot the last 24 hours and I went out to look at the one I'm test driving and I don't see any signs of a water leak. Is there someone specific I should look? Are there a lot of folks with 2011 limited that don't have any water leaks? This thread makes it seem like they all do.

I looked where the spare tire is and all over the 3rd row seat and I see no signs of a Waterleak. Is there another test I should run, or another place i should be looking?

That's all I know of... I know 4-5 people with explorers around the 2011-2012 year... None of theirs leak, if mine leaked I'd find this thread, so obviously it happens, but I think this thread distorts the occurrence due to the sampling... Just my thoughts. Worst case, move to Arizona! I'd be worth it cause its a nice car, and most importantly no socialist bow tie on it:)

LOL!

I REALLY like this 2011 Limited I'm test driving...it's fully loaded. But man...these forums scare you to death. They make it seem like it's the worst car in the world.. :(

Keep in mind that for every 1 vehicle that has something negative reported (water leak, exhaust smell, power steering failure ect...)....there are thousands and thousands of Explorers that are 100% just fine!!!

Most people only come to these forums to investigate something when they have a problem...hence the "concentration" of people reporting problems. But really, they are only a small <1% sliver of the pie.

However; it's not a perfect world so do your diligence and look out for certain things when purchasing any vehicle. If buying used one thing to check is ask the owner where they service their vehicle and run the vin# at the dealer to see the history of repairs and determine if it's been problematic.

FYI, my 2011 does not leak either. Don't forget that the reason there are so many problem reported posts in the Forum is that those owner's with an issue go onto the Internet and look for like issues. Quite a few members found this forum by doing exactly that. That is to be expected. Just the same way that the majority of owners who are happy with their vehicles are not going to go looking for forums to post on to say they don't have an issue.
Just the same, as I mentioned in my PM, no one can guarantee that a vehicle isn't going to have issues as time goes on.

That is what they should have done in the first place.

Got My explorer back today they said the leak
was around the roof rack. They sealed all the
seems roof rack and the hinges. I will Keep an
eye on it see if it leaks.

I'm taking our Explorer in for this today. I noticed water coming down the inside of the drivers side cargo area window. Found that the carpet all around the cargo area was wet and starting to grow mold and mildew, and when I opened up the spare tire compartment there was nearly 3" of water in the spare tire well.

Welcome to the Forum Agrovale.:wavey:
It's unfortunate that your first post had to be about this issue. I hope they are able to fix it for you.

Just heard back from my dealer. This is the second time is has been in for the leak. The first time they thought it was the window and resealed the glass. This time they were able to trace the leak to the roof rack and are re-sealing where it meets the roof. Hopefully this works. They stated to me that this is Ford's recommendation for the fix, so this is a known problem.

This isn't good

If you look at post 29 in the thread http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307130 , you'll see I had the whole rear glass panel replaced. We just had a bad down pour and I was out in it. Came home and was getting some things out of the back and noticed water and water marks on the (inside) left side. The water was coming from where the headliner meets the plastic at the bottom of the rear side window. Called the dealer, going in (again) on Monday. This is my first Ford and I'm starting to get pretty disappointed with the build quality. It's a little over a year old with 13,000 miles.
