2002 Explorer V8 LTD
Hi (New Zealand)

I own a 2003 Explorer V8, LTD with tow package. The tow hitch states max 3200kg (approx 7000lb) with electric brakes and "factory'" Ford Weight distribution bars.

My new enclosed car transporter and expensive payload weights 2800kg (6200lb?). I need to make sure I please the insurance company when towing, as I am sure if I do not stick to the factory specs, they would not pay out in a worse case scenario.

WHAT DO THE FACTORY FORD EXPLORER WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION BARS LOOK LIKE? Where can I buy them (US)

Has anyone got a photo they could share? What is the difference compared to aftermarket bars, however I am sure since it says "factory" Ford, thats what I need to use.

Thanks
Gary (New Zealand)

They never came with 'factory distribution bars', thats the load rating after you add aftermarket ones . . .

Weight distrbution bars look like this:

But it clearly says on the hitch label:
"3200kg with electric brakes and Ford distribution bars"

My hitch is different than the "lighter" hitch and has a plate that looks like it is to fit these bars. They must be "factory" distribution bars?

Trust me, if anything went wrong and I had aftermarket bars on, the insurance company would walk away from the situation ($300000us payload!)
So I am being very carefull!!!!!!!!!

Ford does not build, or sell weight distributing hitches. For those, you have no choice to go aftermarket. I'd recomend http://www.equalizerhitch.com/

Sounds like you've got something connected to your hitch already, could you post a picture? This is what your receiever hitch should look like.

But the thing is the explorer is rated for 700 lbs. of tongue weight with the weight distributing hitch, or 500lbs. without. That is not very much, so be careful.

Hi

Thanks for the link and photo.

Our bar is a std bar, however mine is the NZ factory 7100LB hitch. It is similar, but it does not have the steel "loops". It has a plate above the hitch receiver with a hole either side. I will take a photo soon.

I think I need to talk to Ford....again.

Gary, what are you hauling around worth $300,000 US? How about a pic of whatever it is also? :)
