My quest for 30 MPG - Ford Explorer Gas Mileage Tips

I have never heard of one for a pre OBDII vehicle. The factory Ford message centers for those earlier models does use one wire from the EECIV PCM. It's a data link output, basically a fuel use output. You might be able to adapt a small OEM version to your vehicle, but I don't think that any of them were accurate to begin with, and not able to be recalibrated.
I'd say look for an aftermarket solution if it's out there.

...i have with no luck, and i am hoping someone else might have made an attempt at this before...the bad thing is, i can't even get one for my ranger and it's a '95...:(

Today I finalized a new fairly radical tune for maximum mileage using 89 octane fuel.

The new tune forces the engine into closed loop operation much quicker than it has before. The throttle position to switch to open loop has been raised. There are other tweaks involved in this tune.

The new tune runs fine during a brief road test and idles like a rock.

I will be road testing it this week.

Interesting, that is some of what James and I had discussed, keeping the engine in closed loop more.

I need to find my Excal and send it to him, I have the laptop and wideband now. I'm interested to see how my stock tune is doing, hopefully far off.

Do the new lights ( http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1921826&posted=1#post1921826 ) have any effect on gas mileage?

I had to make a short trip to Naples, FL, and this provided an opportunity to test the effect of the new lights on gas mileage.

The trip South was 112 miles at average speed 70.7 MPH ( GPS determined ). On this leg of the trip, the lights were installed. The next leg of the trip was 110 miles at average speed of 70.2 MPH. On this leg, the lights and bar were removed.

The gas mileage with the lights and bar in place was 31.3 MPG whereas the mileage with the lights and bar removed was 31.5 MPG.

This short trial demonstrated that the lights have no effect on gas mileage.

Test #6 Avoid Excessive Idling
Their Result: More important than we assumed
My Result: Probably true. I do shut the engine off if I'm at a long stop (like a train crossing). But I don't think the added wear and tear on the engine makes it worthwhile for short stops (like at traffic lights, etc.)

I believe this is actually illegal in most places if not all; shutting your vehicle down while at a light or something. As is coasting with your vehicle in neutral.

aldive, i saw a funny device that supposedly boosts highway mileage in Harbor Freight Tools today... Not sure if you've seen this yet, got me laughing, I snapped a photo with my pheon real quick. From what I read on the package, you hook up 'around?' your fuel line, and it 'separates' the fuel molecules? lol. no idea really but here it is.

Not sure if you guys know this but I saw in the Sunday New York Post and cliped it out....

That's one company down. The next should be Tornado. These companies scam people with false advertising to make money on useless products. Maybe they will get the guys on EBay with their fuel saving resistors, and power chips.

Not true, I know I got an extra 150hp from that Tornado and maybe an extra 20mpg from the sticker alone.

**Sorry I had too, lol.

Actually here, they try to encourage turning your vehicle off while waiting for a train to pass. There are signs at every railroad intersection.

aldive, any thought on trying an HHO 'water car' conversion? theres a handful of posts of users on here saying they've got them installed and working, despite the fact most of the internet says they're a scam

I have never really looked into it.

I made one of those HHO devices a while back, they do indeed work...just no where near what they claim.

I personaly feel that it simply acts as an extension of the spark plug in the cyl and ignites fuel slightly better. (It does burn incredibly fast and would float the top of the cyl nearly instantly.

I got on average 1mpg diference with it on. mine pulled 8 amps and produced 0.4L a minute of HHO.

P.S. I should note it wasn't exactly designed with effeciency in mind. I designed it to fit by the airbox.

Do you have data to support that statement?

You'd be surprised what all is illegal in the Peoples Republic of Maryland.

Road trip to Atlanta set for Friday.

On this 1200 mile trip I shall be evaluating several new computer tunes that I have developed for maximum gas mileage.

Data upon my return ....

Road trip to Atlanta set for Friday.

On this 1200 mile trip I shall be evaluating several new computer tunes that I have developed for maximum gas mileage.

Data upon my return ....

Tested 3 new tunes on this trip.

first = 34.7 MPG average speed 67.2 MPH
second = 36.4 MPG avg speed 66.8 MPH
third = 33.4 MPG avg speed 67.4 MPH

Drive ability with all three tunes was excellent. I was unable to tell any difference in the tunes except the mileage.
