4x4 switch

I have a 1993 explorer eddie bauer, my 4x4 switch and low range switches may not be working. The amber indicator lights to the right of the switches do not light when switches are pressed. However, it's bizarre that occasionally those amber lights will light up /glow at random times. Is this a no brainer and it's the switch or could it be a another problem. How would I troubleshoot the switches to see if it's definitely the switches that are the problem?
