95exploderboy's Full Width SAS

Well I've been collecting ideas and parts for a long time now and its about time I started posting something. First off I'm gonna say that this might take a while because of the frequency that I go away for work, but I will make sure to keep everyone posted as I make progress. I have nearly all of the major parts bought and sitting in the shop, so now all I need is the time to put my SAS "kit" together.

What I have planned...

The Front
1979 F150 HP Dana 44
4.88 Yukon Gears
Aussie Locker
All new Timken bearings
Warn Premium Hubs
Stock Shafts for now
Wild Horses 5.5 springs
Stock radius arms with stone crusher extensions and heim joints
Chevy TREs with 1.5" Dom
Toyota Steering box
Square driveshaft

The Rear
1978 Ford 9"
4.86 Richmond Gears
Detroit locker
Disk Conversion
4 door hybrid leaf springs

The plan is to use the 79 upper coil buckets, not sure how I'm compensating for the full width yet. Gonna try to space the bottom coil mounts in enough to keep the springs straight. The arms will be located via a new transmission cross member/RA mount. The arms measure around 40 inches that puts them right under the transfer case. The rear will be SOA, shackles will be adjusted to level everything out. Still not sure of what will happen to the body lift, I'll see how I feel about it after I wheel it a few times.

Something is missing

Sweet extended jack stands. They are good for about 30 inches and have a broad stable base

Drive Slugs
Alloy USA inner/outer axle shafts with Spicer 760 joints

Stock radius arms with stone crusher extensions and heim joints
Chevy TREs with 1.5" Dom
Full Hydro with single sided ram
Square driveshaft

The Rear
1978 Ford 9"
4.86 Richmond Gears
Detroit locker
Disk Conversion
4 door hybrid leaf springs

Ta Da! :D:D

Which reminds me, exploderboy, so what turned out be the reason for the huge fluid difference in the reservoir?

Not sure why I couldn't think of it before.... Its because being a single sided ram/cylinder, when the ram is extended there is more fluid volume because the cylinder is just filled with fluid. When it is fully compressed, then the cylinder is filled with fluid and the hydraulic ram/shaft. Seeing how its like a 1/5 - 2 inch ram, with an 8 inch stroke, I guess that enough to make a significant difference. Also..... I ended up forgetting my hydraulic reservoir in MD (boy was I upset when I figured that out) so I tried it again w/out an external res. I think my problem before when I was trying to purge it of air was because I was doing it with the cylinder connected to the steering, and it must not have been able to fully extend/compress. With the cylinder off the truck it only took a few full cycles before it was out of air. Needless to say right now I'm only using the stock Saginaw reservoir , but I plan to add my other reservoir when I have some free time.

Hmm.... lotta info, did I make sense?

Thanks SNJ, I like your camo paint :D

Aric, Like IZ said, its full hydro, you can see some shots of the steering gear earlier in my thread. I will also get some more shots of the finished/painted setup as soon as I get to PA again. Don't worry there are more pics of everything to come. It was too darn cold and dark on Monday to take any. I'll get many more when I can.

Yeah gothca .. yeah that makes sense, the two sides of a single-ended ram dont have the same volume, I totally forgot about that too.

man that looks great i'm definitely jealous as well

I decided to get out and try out the new setup today. I guess its called a break in run for a reason.

Double low is pretty slick in this thing. I was testing it out behind my house when I heard a "Bang". Jumped out to find this:

It looked like the joint broke first. All I saw broken when I first got out was the apparently crappy Precision ujoint and broken ears. I tried to crawl a little further and snapped the stub shaft. Total time out was about 30 min... I guess its time for alloy shafts and joints.

Here are some more crawling pics from today and a few of the fab work.

New shafts will be ordered this week. I had planned on getting them eventually, but not this soon. I have spares, but I don't feel like swapping shafts every trip at the rate I'm going. I wasn't even pushing it too hard.

I'll give some more updates this weekend after I get back from Denver and get some more work done.

Ahh -- congratulations on the first broken U-joint :)

wow good job on breaking your u joint and shaft lol, it happen's think of it that way !!

Looks like that kit comes with the standard 5-760 joints -- I would upgrade. If that joint shaters (which it will), it might take out the chromo shafts with it and that'll be a waste of $$. I know the higher end joints are waaayyy expensive, but its insurance against the axle shafts.

I have no idea what the warranty is, but it would probably be through Yukon for the shafts and Spicer for the joints.

I'll be calling them on Monday to get some details. I'm also looking at some of the sets that Bronco Graveyard has. I need to see what the warranty is on the no name alloy shafts. I also got a quote on some Alloy USA shafts from machinewave on Pirate. Guess you can't go wrong with any product that has a good warranty as long as its easy to replace. Back to shopping...

Do you think it was because of your T-case's gearing that the U-joint snapped...?

I doubt it -- Im using a stock first gen transfer case (no doubler) and I've gone through two axle shafts and U-joints.

I ended up ordering some Alloy USA inners and outters with the spicer non serviceable joints. We'll see how they hold up. I think the joints will be the weakest link here, but Alloy USA has a 10 year no questions asked wattanty so bring on the rocks.

Sounds like an awesome warranty!

I'm having good luck with the Longfield 300M joints in Superior shafts. The joints have cro-moly caps a lifetime warranty. These joints need to greased every other trip out depending on how much wheelin' you do since there are no needle bearings in there. The cross is made bigger leaving only enough room for a film of grease in the caps. I carry a mini grease gun with my trail tools and grease as necessary.

If you look back in my post you can see where I got the tank and how I adapted it to work with the ex. Yes it is trailered, but it ain't no queen.
