how to open/fix hood release

I have a 2001 XLT. The hood release does not work. I have to bang the heck out of the font of the hood before it pops slightly so I can wedge my fingers in. Is there an easy way to fix the release or does anyone know an easier way that banging like a nutcase on the hood? Thanks

Crud buildup was the problem a couple years ago on my '97. It can be frustrating!
Spray it good with WD-40 or similar and work-it a few times with a screwdriver. Having someone on the inside flipping the actuator helps with a few steps too.
When you think it's good and clean, spray some litium grease in and it should be good.
