Idling high

I have a 02 explorer 4.0 V6 it is idling high around 1300 to 1500 rpm's in neutral in gear at about 900 to 1000 rpm's. There is no check engine light and some times it shifts hard at low speed. Has anybody had this problem and know why?

there is either a vacuum leak like an intake gasket or the idle air control valve is bad. Does the idle speed get worse the hotter the engine gets? Does the idle drop down after the engine gets hot? when it is idiling does it idle rough?

My 02 4.6L would idle normal when first started in the morning, then after about 10 minutes the idle would be really high, 1500+. I ended up replacing teh IAC valve and it went away. Stay clear of any brand other than motorcraft for the iAC, I originally got an autozone one, and it never idled right, the high idle went away but it still was just not right. Also, you could try cleaning the throttle body, maybe it is stuck open just a crack.
