You just need to know the metric sizes as well.
What are you looking to run?
265/75/16 is about a 32x11.5
285/75/16 is about a 33x12.5
315/75/16 is about a 35x12.5

As long as you stay 35 and smaller yes, it's true. But you can always find tires for 16" and 17" wheels, they will just be more expensive too.
