The glass (with plastic back and connectors) fell out of the driver's side mirror on my 1996. The little plastic dowel that holds it to the base and allows up/down movement broke and is gone. It is remote controlled but not heated. Dealer wants $162 for the assembly plus $70 for labor.

Is this a big job to replace? Would I need to pull the inside door panel out? All suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

That's funny you mention that. I was going to the bank in the Taurus, and as I pulled up to the ATM I mis-judged the car's size, and my driver mirror smacked into one of the stupid stationary poles...mirror snapped backwards with a horrible noise, and the glass popped right out leaving just a plastic knub. Amazingly, the mirror assembly did not break (Snapped back into place) and the glass did not shatter or even crack. Glass popped right back on, and it's still working today.

I still missed the Explorer's folding mirrors. ;)

Thanks, guys. Any special tools required to get the door panel off?

Phillips screw driver
11mm socket on a 4 inch extention
a pannel popper or a skinny dry wall spreader to pop the door pannel off.

The job is SO easy.
Take your $70.00 and do some thing nice for your self.
