In an attempt to resolve the exasperating ticking sound issue (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203852&highlight=tick ) on my truck, I decided to swap out the pulley on the power steering pump motor.

Prior to installing a new power steering pump, as a long shot, I decided to try a new power steering pump pulley. I would use a new pulley anyway if I decide to replace the power steering pump.

I picked up the new power steering pump pulley at AutoZone for $22.99 ( http://www.autozone.com/R,APP926155...partType,00713/shopping/partProductDetail.htm ).

The initial step in the pulley replacement was to remove the intake tube. This was followed by removing the e fan (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140251&highlight=electric+fan ) [ to gain more space to use air tools ] and setting it to the side ( made easier with quick connect connectors on the 12v power and ground wires.

Next, I loosened the 3 x 10mm bolts that attach the pulley to the pump with an air ratchet. This was followed by removing the serpentine drive belt. Subsequently the 3 bolts were removed and the pulley pulled free ( it took some tugging to free the pulley ).

The exposed area was carefully cleaned and then the new pulley was installed by simply reversing the removal procedure outlined above.

The 3 x 10mm bolts were torques to 18 ft. lbs. Then the serpentine drive belt was installed. Then the e fan and intake tube were reinstalled.

A visual inspection confirmed that the power steering pump pulley was accurately aligned with the other pulleys.

The truck was fired up and a final check of the install was conducted.

This undemanding project took all of 20 minutes.

We shall, over the next few days see if the tick issue is resolved.
