washington sas people take my money

Sounds like for what you are wanting to use it for, a Jeep YJ dana 30 would be a good axle to start with. They are the right width and same bolt pattern as your Explorer. They are readily available and fairly inexpensive. A spring over with stock Wagoneer springs would put you at about the right hieght. The reason I say wagoneer springs instead of the wrangler b/c most people have found the wrangler springs to be too soft for out heavy explorers.

Here is a quick list to get you started
1. 87-96 yj d30
2. spring perches
3. wagoneer springs (try junkyards, or ebay)
4. You will need gears for the front and rear. (lockers?? For what you want probably just in the rear)
5. New shocks (Measure after the axle is installed)
6. Extended brake lines
7. Steering box from Gen1 explorer
8. shackles
9. whoever is doing the fab will handle most everything else (ex. steel for crossmembers and hangers, and any reinforcing for the steering box)

Try reading Sections525 sas thread. He has some great ideas and is a good fabricator. (you could get ideas for your mounts and such)

Here is a picture of mine with 4" wagoneer springs and d30

wow that doesnt seem like there is much parts needed, how long should one of these take to do.

Well that list can be decieving. I just wanted to get you started. There is alot more to consider. One of the biggest is the steering. With a spring over, you will need to come up with some sort of hi steer. Either buy one or custom make one. I think M.O.R.E makes one that will work. (yomie has it installed on his d30). And if you research Chief34, he made his own. You should expect to spend atleast $500 for this. Also, the fabrication takes time and money. Try searching and reading more SAS registrys to further the list I gave you. It should be a good starting point, but there is many more project specific details to consider.

Yea ive been looking at the sas sites and by all means i know that list is just basic but whats a hi steer exactly.

well just a basic hi steer moves the steering arm (connects to pitman arm) above the springs so its closer to parallel with the tie rod(bar between steering knuckles). this helps with a variety of problems. For one, with a spring over, the drag link in stock location would be at a very severe angle upwards and probably touching the spring sometimes through out the suspensions cycling. This severe angle results in bump steer. (steering wheel being forced every which way from bumps in the road)
Some people put a bend in the dragling so compensate for this. That is referred to as "scary steering" ;). It makes the draglink very weak and vulnerable. For a rig to see as much road time as yours, I would personally look towards the M.O.R.E hi steer set-up. Hope this helps.

Other than being a time consuming PITA it is not really that hard to do yourself. Well except for the bumper brackets on a 2nd gen.

I am sure many of us could help as I think most of us have done 1 0r 2 ( at least I know myself, JR, Albino, and likely Arsoul have). Point is you can do it.....

If you really want me to take your money I would be glad too though :D No I wouldn't actually charge you labor. The money is for food and beer since it would be your truck getting the work, and you would owe me one day when I needed extra paws. (See Albino keeps me in his debt so I have to help work on his truck :D )

Honestly though plan a weekend for the project and get er done. It's not too bad, and we can all provide support over the internet.

Edit : I forgot about you ranajo and DWD

Bob will be in Moab for a week and I think Kevin is out of town?

So when are you going to help with "The White One'? I'm about ready to pull the BL off

I kow it should be easy but ive never done one so i would rather have help from those who have done it. Im always here if anyone on here needs help, but that would be cool for me to buy the food and beer, but i would also want to throw some money your way to, i see it as fair. LOl i like the whole debt concept but yea i would have no problem gigving
helping you out.

Here comes summer, so ya better pick a weekend for me to help quick like :D
You should think about bringing it to my house. I know space is a lot more limited here, but I got some new toys which may speed the process up a bit.

You should leave it though. Besides would you not rather have all SL on that Pony?

Sounds like Ranajo has you taken care of moose........
If for some reason it does not work out let me know, and I will be glad to give a hand. I am gone a lot in the summer, but it is fairly easy to catch me on here and set something up.

Thanks, im down for anyone helping me, ide like to get it done so its done and i learn how to do it, so whom ever wants to help, ill gladly except the offer.

nice toys by the way....

Being that I am a planner and like to have all my ducks in a row, let's throw this idea out there. Let's do it at my place in Mount Vernon, it's also 90ranajo's(Bob) place. Let's shoot for a weekend in August where both myself and Bob will be back from Japan and we can get it done prior to the run down south at Evan's creek. In the meantime moose1 can work on getting all the parts together needed for the swap, with help and advice from us. Then we have everything readu to go, we meet here, bring whatever tools you want, especially a second welder to make things go faster, and we can get it done in a weekend:D

for the axle swap, ill still be down for doing the axle swap in aug. definitly. Diff with the Jeep YJ dana 30 swap what do i need, as far as you can see. the added time will give me more time to find it. Also what kind of lift could i get with this swap so i may get the tires needed for proper fitment.
