I don't know what you are seeing but I could bet it is not the reason your 4x4 isn't working.

are you sure because i have been researching and i think it is part of the locking hub?

Glacier's 1st gen brake job diary (in General Explorations forum, also linked to in the useful threads forum) has several pictures of the parts that come off while getting at the rotor. Perhaps you can find the part in there and figure out what it is?

that's the link I posted :P I book marked it for when I did my rotors... very VERY helpful... got through the job no problem after never doing them before... no problem

sorry guys ... its the metal piston sticking out of the red thing off the side of the spindle anyone have an idea of the name or how to remove it?
thanks

You've heard of paint by numbers, lets try a Dana35 by the numbers... I'd venture a guess you're talking about the Antilock Brake Sensor (ABS) sensor pictured below.. As far as 4x4 not working what is the problem? Does the 4x4 button work (cause the 4x4 ligths to come on, or are you having problems with your hubs locking?

yep i geuss that makes sense thanks

The ABS sensor doesn't move. It is a magnet sensor used in conjunction with the tone ring (sprocket looking gear pressed into the backside of the rotor) and ABS computer to determine wheel speed by counting the # of sprocket teeth that pass in a given time period..

We can better point you into the correct direction once you respond with what kind of 4x4 problem your having. :feedback:
Basically there are two types of 4x4 problems:
  1. Pressing 4x4 fails to shift the T-Case into 4x4 (No 4x4 button or dash lights).
  2. 4x4 engages ok, but front wheels get no power/don't move (HUB lock failure).
