4.0 Exhaust Clip Thread !

Killed the cat... lol

So, I removed the cat.. and after discovering the funky end on the y-pipe, my friend and I fabricated an adapter out of the two ends of the first cat. Worked out pretty nice. So now it is straight to the glasspack. Doesn't sound much different. But I recorded some new video of it anyway!

I need to figure some way to mount my Cannon camera. And quit using my phone lol.

now it REALLY sounds like a dirt bike, lol

Yeah lol, i like it though. Better than most people trying to make it sound like a v8.

that's one reason i like mine, it's not trying to sound like something it isnt - i've embraced my identity as a V6! :D lol

Haha yeah. I mean, I love the sound of a good v8 but it'll never sound the same coming from a fuel injected v6.

and like i said earlier, i love how the 4.0 has it's own trademark sound. it doesnt sound like "just another V6". those of us who know it, recognize it when we hear it.

ALSO! video of my truck at WOT coming soon! my last video only had Idle and <2500 RPM cruising. i'll try and get out there and record some more in the next few days.

It's cool how even the smaller v6's in the rangers sound the same. 2.9's, etc. You can always tell the difference from the 4.0 though.

sounds really good dude, sounds more like a race exhaust with no muffler like that! but it doesnt sound trashy and crackly and poppy. now i'm thinking about taking my muffler off just to see what mine sounds like! :D

I made mine so I can just unbolt and remove the muffler. Without cats it is EXTREMELY loud so.. Yeah, I would rather not get a ticket for noise pollution.

if you want it removable, just use an exhaust cutout before a muffler, then 3 wings nuts, and your done!

thanks for the compliments too :)

my muffler is just clamped in, so i might be able to unclamp it and put a piece of pipe in it's place, that way, i still have a full taipipe and hopefully keep my exhaust velocity up, as well reducing noise a little bit compared to a dump

my muffler is bolted on with two of these types of clamps

Impact wrench and 4 bolts is all it takes me for a muffler swap. Lately ive been swapping between the super 40 and the max flo- depending on my mood that month. Max flo is soft and smooth while the super 40 is agressive and throaty. Im bout to trade the max flo out again for the super 40 for the winter

and if I want it really quiet, a high flo cat and super turbo thrush go in :)

haha yea im in the process of pulling it right now again,i think i have a small crack in the block, yea it sucks.im also doing a little more work to the motor to get it ready for the 150 shot im going to be trying to spray!!:D ill be going to a bigger cam and having some more lower intake and head port work done. it should sound just a little different after i get done.ill have to post a sound difference after im done!!:burnout::burnout:

well she is done and sounds just slightly different, cant tell as much in the vid but in person you defiantly can tell!!

sounds good jd

aklm, Can I get some stats on your exhaust? Are you running cats? Just the factory pipes into a 2.5" Y then into the muffler?

Hi there,

I have a '99 4.0 Sohc Explorer.
I wanted to do true duals from the manifolds to the back in 2,25 inch pipes.
But after some reading i found out that i will lose a lot of low end power (torque). So i'm thinking about dropping the true dual idea.

What i want (would like :p:):

- More horsepower and torque for faster acceleration.
- no cats (back o2 sensors are already removed)
- Dual endpipes
Something like this:

What i have already bought:

- 6 m (about 20 feet) of 2,25 inch exhaust pipe
- 4 custom made freeflow mufflers:

What exhaust setup would be best for me?
Thanks for your input :)

I had the same dillema. Quite honestly, I wouldnt run true duals. Even though it sounds good, out 4.0 motors hate it. This is why I built myself an off-road Y pipe 2.5" mandrel bent throughout and ran it to a single muffler then a single 2.5" pipe out the rear. I had dual before this (not true, had a dual in/dual out muffler) and low end torque suffered from this. Going back to a single 2.5" out the rear made it better. You can also run a "dummy" pipe and real pipe if you're going for the look? lol. Anyway, how did you delete your rear 02's? I used to have a tune to delete mine, but I got rid of it due to it needing premium and now my check engine sits on. I bought 02 sims but cannot figure out how to install. Im curious how you did it. Let me know
